Barons Fall to Behrend in AMCC Semifinals

Box Score

ERIE, Pa. – The fourth-seeded Franciscan men's soccer team fell to top-seeded Penn St.-Behrend,4-1, in the AMCC Tournament semifinal match Wednesday afternoon.

The loss drops the Barons to 11-6-2 on the year, while Penn St.-Behrend improves to 15-4.

Playing in their second-straight cold and rainy game, the Barons struggled to find their rhythm early on. Franciscan was awarded two corner kicks in the first 10 minutes but couldn't get a shot off and the Lions took over possession. Pressuring the Baron back line, Penn St.-Behrend's Matt Dziadosz got a shot off but senior keeper Thomas Dosedel made a diving save. The Lions kept the ball on offense and Aaron Harris was able to chip it in over Dosedel's hands off a pass from Nick McKee to give the Lions a 1-0 lead 12:37 into the firs.t

The Lions maintained possession for much of the first half but were only able to get off two more shots, both wide, as the two teams headed into the break with the Lions leading 1-0.

Penn St.-Behrend opened the second half quickly with back-to-back goals in the first seven minutes to take a 3-0 lead.

Franciscan had one of its best scoring chances late in the second as a Lion was called for a foul right outside the 18-yard box and the Barons got a free kick. Senior Leo Herrmann took the kick and blasted the ball to the top of the net, but Penn St.-Behrend keeper Chris Ralph made an incredible jumping save, just barely punching the ball out of the air to keep the lead, 3-0.

Behrend added its final goal of the game with just under 18 to play as Cole Ferguson one-timed a pass from Zhafar Dzhabarow right inside the near post.

Freshman JP Bobak gave the Barons life as he scored Franciscan's only goal of the game with 8:28 to play. The Behrend defense was attempting to clear the ball, but Bobak put constant pressure on the backline and was able to go one-on-one with a Lion defender and steal the ball in the box. After gaining possession, Bobak chipped it in over Ralph's hands to cut the lead to 4-1 with his ninth goal of the year. Bobak put one final shot on net with 5:20 to play, but Ralph turned him away to secure the 4-1 win for Behrend.

Bobak led the Barons with three shots while Herrmann added one. Dosedel made one save in the first half.

Leo Herrmann and Dominic Vander Woude were named to the All-Tournament team.

With the loss, the Barons are eliminated from the AMCC tournament after reaching the semifinals for the first time in program history. Franciscan will await the ECAC selection committee decision about a possible berth in the 2017 ECAC Men's Soccer Tournament to extend its season.
