Box Score STEUBENVILLE – The Franciscan women's basketball team dropped its home opener to Geneva, 69-30, Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Barons were led by freshman Rhiannon Brodbine with 10 points and seven rebounds while sophomore Kaitlyn Sonneberger chipped in five points and pulled down a game-high eight rebounds, four on each side of the court. Sophomore Cianna Vaughan finished with seven rebounds and a block to go with her four points. Junior Gaby De Jesus finished the day with five points, including the Lady Barons' only three-pointer of the game.
The Lady Barons took an early 4-2 lead behind a pair of free throws from Brodbine. The Golden Tornadoes took the lead with a three on their next possession before Franciscan held its final lead of the game, 6-5, off a jumper from Sonneberger. Geneva used 13 unanswered points over the final 6:32 of the first take the lead, 18-6.
Geneva used a 12-4 second quarter to take a 20-point lead, 30-10, at halftime.
After Geneva hit a pair of free-throws to open the third, freshman Rebekah Nevarez made a jumper to get the gap back to 20 and De Jesus cut the lead down to 17 with her only three-pointer of the game with 7:29 to play. After the teams traded layups, Geneva pushed its lead to 41-17 with 3:42 to play after a 7-0 run. Brodbine halted the Golden Tornado run with a jumper off a pass from De Jesus with 3:15 to play to cut the lead to 41-19. Geneva closed out the quarter with an 8-4 run to take a 49-23 lead into the final quarter.
Geneva out-scored the Lady Barons 20-7 in the final 10 minutes to seal the 69-30 win. Freshman Laura Salzmann hit a jumper as time expired for the final score of the game.
Franciscan shot 17.9% from the floor (10-for-56) and was almost perfect from the foul line, 9-10. The Lady Barons out-rebounded Geneva, 41-37, including 20 offensive boards.
Franciscan will have the week of Thanksgiving off as the Lady Barons prepare to open their AMCC schedule at home against La Roche. Tip-off is set for 8:00 pm on Wednesday, November 29 at Kuzma Court.
