Box Score LATROBE, Pa. – The Franciscan women's lacrosse team suffered a tough 18-11 setback to St. Vincent, Wednesday night.
Despite it being spring time on the calender, the Lady Barons took the field under chilly conditions Wednesday evening and their sticks took a little bit to warm up. Down 2-0 3:45 into the first, junior Mary Krolicki scored her first goal of the game to get FUS on the board. Franciscan won the ensuing draw but couldn't capitalize on the quick scoring opportunity. After a good clear attempt by St. Vincent, the Bearcats turned the ball over in front of the cage and sophomore Brittany Bain picked up the ground ball and started a good clear for the Lady Barons. After getting the ball from sophomore Elizabeth McEntee, classmate Carly McDonald evened the score at 2-2 with 23:45 to play.
Krolicki gave the Lady Barons their only lead of the game on the very next FUS possession as Elizabeth Dawyot won the next draw control and after her shot went just wide, handed the ball off to Krolicki for the 3-2 Lady Baron lead.
St. Vincent quickly took control back as the Bearcats scored four unanswered goals to take a 6-3 lead. McEntee put an end to the Bearcat run with her first goal of the game with 16:32 to play as Krolicki won the draw to give the Lady Barons an offensive chance. The Bearcats went on another four-goal run to push their lead to 10-4 with 9:13 to play. Three minutes later, McEntee and Krolicki posted back to back goals for Franciscan to cut the lead down to 10-6 with 4:58 to play in the first.
After another St. Vincent goal, McDonald notched her second score of the game to keep the Lady Barons close at 11-7. The Bearcats scored two final goals of the half before freshman Elaine Kelly closed out the frame with a free position goal to send the teams into half with a 13-8 lead for St. Vincent.
St. Vincent opened the second half with a goal to take a 14-8 lead 1:17 into action but neither team could find the back of the net for the next nine minutes. The Bearcats finally broke the scoreless streak and took a 15-8 lead with 19:50 to play. Franciscan scored its first goal of the second half as McDonald found the back of the net for the third time, and McEntee finished off her hat trick with a free position shot to cut the lead down to 15-10. The Bearcats and Lady Barons traded the next two goals; Franciscan's coming of Dawyot's stick before St. Vincent closed out the scoring with a pair of goals to take the 18-11 win.
McEntee, Krolicki, and McDonald each had three goals while McEntee and Krolicki added an assist. Dawyot and Krolicki each won six draw controls while senior Maryanna Leonard and Krolicki picked up five ground balls each.
Bain made seven saves for the Lady Barons.
The Lady Barons won 15 draw controls and picked up 26 ground balls. Franciscan was 2-fo-5 on free position shots and 14-23 on clears.
The Lady Barons hit the road for the their first divisional game in program's history as they travel to Medaille on Saturday for a 2pm game and take on Hilbert on Sunday in a 2pm contest.
