Barons Drop Home Contest to ONU

Box Score

STEUBENVILLE – The Franciscan men's lacrosse team suffered a 21-7 loss on Memorial Field to visiting Ohio Northern, Saturday afternoon.

The Polar Bears rushed out to a quick 4-0 lead behind three goals from Lucas Blaszyk and one from Peter Hardt. Senior Paul Modzelewski put a halt to the ONU run as he hit the back of the net for an unassisted goal with 6:09 to play in the first quarter. Modzelewski added another goal 1:30 later after an ONU goal to trim the lead to three, 5-2. The Polar Bears closed out the opening quarter with two more goals to lead 7-2 after the first 15.

Sophomore Dan McCartney opened the second quarter with his first of the game to pull the Barons to within four, 7-3, and classmate Jonas McCaig went topshelf after another ONU goal before Samuel Neff closed out the half with a goal for the visitors. The teams went into halftime with Ohio Northern holding a 9-4 advantage.

ONU controlled the opening of the third and pushed the lead to 12-4 just under five minutes into the quarter. McCaig scored Franciscan's only goal of the period with 4:33 to play with an unassisted goal. ONU scored the quarter's final goal to give the Polar Bears a 13-5 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Polar Bears exploded for eight goals in the fourth, including three during an untimely two-minute unreleasable penalty for the Barons. Franciscan scored the game's final two goals as sophomore transfer Joe Lomady scored his only goal of the game and McCaig finished off his hat trick to bring the score to its final, 21-7.

Despite giving up 21 goals, freshman Matt Marrenna hung tough in net and posted a career-best 21 saves, tying him for third on the school's individual game list.

"They really played hard today," remarked head coach Pete Rosaschi following the game. "We had a lot of guys playing out of position and I am proud of how tough they were out there."

The Barons look to rebound as they host Hiram on Wednesday at 4pm.
