Lady Barons Defeat Hilbert for First AMCC Win

BUFFALO, NY – The Franciscan women's lacrosse team wrapped up a quick trip to Buffalo with an 18-10 win over Hilbert, Sunday afternoon.

The Lady Barons wasted little time getting on the board as sophomore Carly McDonald took a pass from classmate Treise McCarthy and scored the game's first goal 35 seconds into action. After about an eight-minute break in scoring, Franciscan scored two quick goals from sophomore Elizabeth Dawyot and McCarthy to push its lead to 3-0 with 21:33 to play.

Franciscan continued to control the action and took advantage of a free position attempt as senior Anne Foster scored with 17:45 to play. Foster won the ensuing draw control and Dawyot picked up a groundball off a saved shot and put it right back on cage for her second goal of the game. Sophomore Elizabeth McEntee pushed the lead to 6-0 with 15:36 to play as she finished off a pass from McCarthy for her first goal of the game.

The Hawks scored their first goal just under two minutes later as they were awarded a free position shot and Nikki Schneider converted to cut the lead to 6-1. McEntee completed a hat trick in the first half with a pair of goals within 30 seconds of each other to push the Franciscan lead back to 8-1 with 10:46 to play. Eight seconds later, the Hawks scored their second of the game off a free position shot at 10:38. With 7:32 to play, Hilbert scored its first non-free position goal to cut the Lady Baron lead down to 8-3.

After the Hawks and Lady Barons traded turnovers, Franciscan completed a clear and Foster scored her second of the day, this time off a pass from McDonald to give FUS a 9-3 lead. Junior Mary Krolicki won the next draw and McEntee scored her fourth of the game to give Franciscan a 10-3 lead with 3:07 to play.

McDonald scored Franciscan's final goal of the half with 43 seconds left but Hilbert scored two quick goals to send the two teams into half with Franciscan leading 11-5.

Krolicki scored the second half's first two goals to give FUS a 13-5 lead with 22:15 to play. 10 seconds later, Hilbert answered to stay in striking distance, but Franciscan kept the Hawks at arm's length as the Lady Barons seemed to have an answer for each Hilbert goal. The two teams traded goals to give FUS a 14-7 lead before McEntee and Dawyot went back-to-back to give Franciscan a 16-7 lead.

The Hawks scored on back to back free position attempts before cutting the lead to 16-10 with 3:42 to play. Franciscan could not be rattled and Krolicki and Dawyot scored the game's final two goals to hand Franciscan the 18-10 win.

McEntee led the Lady Barons with five goals and three assists while Dawyot chipped in four goals and an assist. Krolicki and McDonald each had three goals while McDonald and McCarthy handed out three assists.

"We were really able to improve our offensive transition today and that put us in a position to maintain possession," remarked head coach Maura Conant. "I am really proud of the attackers today."

Krolicki and Dawyot each had four ground balls while senior Christine Rice picked up three and caused a team-best two turnovers. Dawyot led the team with five draw controls.

Sophomore goalie Brittany Bain made 15 saves in the win for Franciscan.

"We had a few goals scored on us of off fouls so we need to tighten up our defense," continued Coach Conant.

The Lady Barons look to sure up their defense as they travel to Wooster on Wednesday for a 4pm game.
