Lady Barons Take Down Yellow Jackets

WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The Franciscan women's lacrosse team showcased its high powered offense in an impressive 19-5 win over Waynesburg, Wednesday night.

Exactly four years to the day, the Lady Barons won the first game in program history and today Franciscan celebrated that win with the largest margin of victory for FUS. The 19-5 win is the first of the 2017 season and the third-straight over the Yellow Jackets.

Waynesburg scored the first goal of the game just 4:35 into action but Franciscan re-grouped and rattled off six-straight goals to take a 6-1 lead. Sophomore Treise McCarthy won the face off after the Yellow Jacket goal and sophomore Carly McDonald took the ball to the cage to tie the game at 1-1 thanks to an assist from McCarthy. Junior Mary Krolicki won the next draw and senior Maryanna Leonard tossed the ball to sophomore Elizabeth Dawyot for the quick goal to give the Lady Barons the lead with 24:19 to play.

Over the next 6:38, four different Lady Barons scored to push their lead to 6-1. After Waynesburg socred their second gal of the game with 17:41 left in regulation, Waynesburg scored its final goal of the half to push the Lady Baron lead to 7-2. Franciscan closed out the half with seven more goals to lead 14-2 at the break.

Franciscan out-scored the Yellow Jackets 5-3 in the second half to seal the 19-5 win.

McDonald led the Lady Barons with four goals while McCarthy, Elizabeth Dawyot, and Mary Krolick each had three. Sophomore Elizabeth McEntee finished the day with two goals and five assists.

"It was great to see the midfield and attack really working together out there today," remarked head coach Maura Conant. "Everyone was involved on offense today."

Freshman goalie Brittany Bain needed just three saves to earn her first win of the year.

"It was great to see Brittany played really well today," said Coach Conant.

The Lady Barons will take a short break for spring break before returning to the field on March 22 for a 5:00 pm game against St. Vincent.
