Six Lady Barons Score in 14-8 Win Over D'Youville

STEUBENVILLE – The Franciscan women's lacrosse team played its first game on its home field Saturday and took down Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent, D'Youville, 14-8, during an overcast and chilly afternoon.

Junior Mary Krolicki and sophomore Carly McDonald were responsible for the first two goals of the game as Krolicki opened the scoring 2:02 into action and then assisted on McDonald's goal three minutes later.

The Spartans evened the contest with two quick goals before McDonald regained the lead for the Lady Barons with her second of the day 10:41 into play. After a Spartan goal exactly two minutes later tied the game, sophomores Elizabeth McEntee and Elizabeth Dawyot and Krolicki scored three-straight goals for Franciscan to give the hosts a 6-3 lead. DYC got one back, but sophomore Treise McCarthy capped the scoring in the first half with her first goal of the game just 49 seconds before halftime.

Franciscan carried its 7-4 lead into the break.

The Lady Barons broke the game wide open with five-straight goals to open the second half. Krolicki kicked off the scoring just as she did in the first half and was followed by McDonald once again. McDonald scored her second of the half and fourth of the game 3:57 into the second half as the Lady Barons were playing a man down on defense. Freshman Elaine Kelly and McCarthy scored on back-to-back free position attempts to give Franciscan its largest lead of the game, 12-4, with just over 20 minutes left in the game.

The Spartans got one back with just under 15 minutes to play but McDonald scored her team-best fifth goal of the game to give Franciscan back an eight-goal lead, 13-5. DYC scored back-to-back goals for the first time since the beginning of the first half to cut the lead down to 13-7 with a minute to play.

Krolicki took a pass from McCarthy with 41 seconds to play and push the Lady Baron lead to 14-7 with her fourth goal of the game but D'Youville capped the scoring with just 31 seconds left as Jillian Golding scored to bring the score to its final, 14-8.

McDonald led the Lady Baron offense with five goals and an assist was Krolicki added four goals and two assists. McCarthy chipped in a pair of goals to go with her assist. McEntee, Kelly, and Dawyot each finished the day with a goal and an assist while senior Anne Foster handed out one assist.

Defensively, the Lady Barons were led by sophomore Elizabeth Jordan with five caused turnovers and three ground balls. McEntee had three caused turnovers while freshman Bridget Clune, senior Catherine Cahill and McCarthy each had two.

Krolicki won six draw controls for the Lady Barons while Dawyot added four. As a team, Franciscan won 13 of the 24 draws and out-shot the Spartans 30-24. Franciscan was 11-for-19 on clears and won the ground ball battle, 21-16.

Franciscan returns to action on Tuesday as the Lady Barons welcome Thiel to Memorial Field for a 4pm contest.
