Box Score STEUBENVILLE - The Franciscan men's lacrosse team won its second-straight game as the Barons posted an 18-11 win over Mount St. Joseph University on Senior day, Saturday.
Franciscan scored the game's first goal as junior Jonas McCaig went unassisted at the cage before the Lions rattled off three-straight to take a 3-1 lead. McCaig and junior Mike Rosaschi went back-to-back to tie the game but the Lions had an answer to take the lead back, 4-3. McCaig and senior Paul Modzelewski then scored back-to-back goals but Kevin McClanahan finished out the quarter with two straight to give the Lions a 6-5 lead after the first quarter.
McClanahan opened the second quarter with his third-straight goal to give MSJ a 7-5 lead, but Franciscan took over from there as the Barons scored four-straight goals, including a pair from sophomore Dan McCartney, to take a 9-7 lead. Connor McPhail halted the Baron run with 6:18 to play before freshman Luke Modzelewski scored his second career goal, assisted by older brother Paul, to push the lead to 10-8. Paul Modzelewski gave the Barons a three-goal lead with his second goal of the game with 2:38 to play before halftime.
After the break, Paul Modzelwski helped on Rosaschi's third goal of the game just under two minutes into the third. The Lions quickly answered that goal but senior Spenser Hillton and Rosaschi finished off the quarter with a pair of goals to give Franciscan a 14-9 lead.
The Lions hung around and scored the first two goals of the fourth before Franciscan opened up a four-goal run to close out the game. Rosaschi and McCaig each scored a pair of goals while Paul Modzelewski helped on both of Rosaschi's goals.
McCaig finished the day with six goals and four assists while Rosaschi chipped in six goals and two assists. Paul Modzelewski scored a pair of goals and handed out a record-setting six assists. Those six assists mark the most in a single game in program history.
Freshman Luke Lyons was steady on the faceoff and won 26-of-33 face-offs and picked up 14 ground balls.
Franciscan won the ground ball battle (59-36) and led in shots, 54-32. The Barons were 13-of-18 on clears.
Freshman Matt Marrenna posted nine saves in his seventh win for the Barons.
Franciscan wraps up the regular season at home on Wednesday as the Barons host Muskingum at 5:00 pm.
