Box Score STEUBENVILLE – The Franciscan men's lacrosse team suffered a 21-7 loss to Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent, Alfred State, Sunday afternoon.
During picture perfect conditions, the Barons struggled to get into an offensive rhythm while the Pioneers capitalized early on FUS turnovers. Franciscan turned the ball over on their first possession and the Pioneers took it straight to the cage to open the game 1-0. After a save on the other end of the field, the Barons completed a successful clear and Joe Irving shoveled the ball to sophomore Dan McCartney who pushed it in the goal under the goalie's feet to tie the game at 1-1.
The Pioneers then used a 4-0 run, including a pair of man-up goals to take a 5-1 lead after the first quarter. Just under three minutes after the second quarter started, McCartney took a pass from senior Paul Modzelewski and beat the Pioneer goalie to trim the lead to 5-2. The Pioneers scored the game's next two goals before McCartney finished off his hat trick with an unassisted tally with 10:22 to play in the half. After another Alfred State Goal pushed the visitor's lead to 8-3, junior Mike Rosaschi finished off a pass from Modzelewski to cut the lead down to 8-4. Joe Johnson closed out the half with a pair of goals, however, for Alfred State to give the Pioneers a 10-4 lead going into halftime.
Franciscan won the opening faceoff of the third quarter and promptly attacked the net. Modzelewski handed the ball off to Rosaschi once again for the goal as the Barons trail 10-5 early in the third quarter. The Pioneers took advantage of an extra-man opportunity and scored just over a minute later to push their lead back to six, 11-5. Modzelewski sandwich a pair of his own goals around two from Teddy Alvarado before Johnson closed out the quarter with a goal to give Alfred State a 14-7 lead at the end of the third.
The fourth quarter was all Alfred State as the Pioneers scored seven goals to pick up the 21-7 win.
