Lady Barons Fall to Presidents

STEUBENVILLE – The Franciscan women's soccer team dropped a non-conference matchup to Washington & Jefferson, 5-0, Tuesday afternoon.

The Presidents got off to a quick start scoring the game's first two goals in the first 10 minutes of action. Jordan Toohey picked up both goals off assists from Tatiana Ruzzini and Lexey Finney. W&J added to its lead just 10 minutes later as Ashton Grimm put the finishing touches on a ball on the ground in front of the net and got it past the goal line in an empty net at the 18:10 mark. Josie Madden pushed the W&J lead to 4-0 with a goal from in right in front of the net off a pass from Ruzzini.

Franciscan got one of its best scoring chances as the clock was winding down in the first. The Lady Barons pushed the ball up field and junior Elizabeth Dawyot put a shot just high over the net. After a foul by W&J gave the possession back to Franciscan, the Lady Barons earned a corner kick. Sophomore Janelle Lunde placed the ball well in the box, but Franciscan was unable to get a clean shot off. Freshmen Kaitrin O'Leary got the final shot of the half off but it went high and the two teams headed into the break with the score 5-0 in favor of W&J.

After another W&J goal shortly after the second half began, the Lady Barons struggled to get another clean shot off though the defense was able to keep the Presidents off the board for the final 40 minutes.

Franciscan will travel to Chatham tomorrow for a 7:30 pm contest to wrap up its non-conference schedule.
