Baron Comeback Falls Just Short Against W&J

Box Score

STEUBENVILLE – The Franciscan men's soccer team scored late in the second half but the visiting Washington & Jefferson Presidents used their two first-half goals to hand the Barons a 2-1 loss at home, Wednesday evening.

In their final non-conference game, the Barons found themselves down 2-0 with just under 20 minutes to play in the game. After gaining possession in their offensive third, the Barons had the ball kicked away by the W&J backline but sophomore Ian Baldau was in the right place at the right time. Baldau lofted the ball up and over several Presidents right to the foot of a charging senior Leo Herrmann. Herrmann's aggressive play pulled the goalie off of his line and the forward was able to kick it high over the keeper and into an empty net to trim the deficit to 2-1.

Though the Barons didn't get a shot off in the final 19:18, the Barons showed improvement in its build through the midfield and kept the ball in their offensive third for much of the rest of the game.

The two teams played a scoreless first 28 minutes of action until the Presidents broke through and took a 1-0 lead at 28:24. After a Franciscan foul, Jason Yobbi lofted a free kick from about 45 yards out from the goal to Aleksander DeHaven who was right in front of the net. DeHaven headed the ball into the upper right 90 for the first tally. About four minutes later, Conner Anderson connected on a Sam Dudley corner kick for the Presidents' second goal and the 2-0 lead.

The Barons got off the four final shots of the first half but could not get one to land as they took the 2-0 deficit into halftime.

After the break, the Barons controlled the pace of play much more than in the first and controlled the ball at midfield but had to settle for the solo goal in the final 45 minutes.

W&J held a slight 12-9 advantage in shots and 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Senior goalie Thomas Dosedel tallied four saves in net while his W&J counterpart, Nick Stasko made three in the win.

Franciscan opens Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference action on Saturday as the Barons host Hilbert for a 1pm game.
