Lady Barons Defeat Hilbert, 2-1

Box Score

STEUBENVILLE – The Lady Barons used a goal in each half to help carry the Franciscan women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Hilbert, Saturday afternoon, to open AMCC action.

Franciscan came out firing as the Lady Barons took the game's first eight shots. The eighth shot was the difference maker as junior Elizabeth Dawyot received a clean pass from sophomore Sarah Cocozza and she buried a high shot in the back of the net for the Lady Baron 1-0 lead 19:11 into action.

Franciscan didn't let up as the Lady Barons continued to put shots on goal but couldn't find the back of the net and took the 1-0 lead into halftime.

Franciscan picked up where the team left off as the Lady Barons came back from the break and put four the half's first five shots on net. Hilbert had one of its best scoring chances in the 66th minute as the Lady Barons were called for a foul just outside the box but the Hawk free kick went high and the Lady Barons maintained their one-goal lead.

Freshman Kelsey Scott-Avery and senior Megan Luiso hit a pair of shots high before freshman Gracie Tillman slid an easy pass into the box for Luiso. Luiso one-timed it past the Hilbert keeper to give Franciscan a 2-0 lead with 14:46 to play.

Hilbert got on the board with just 48 seconds left in regulation but Franciscan was able to maintain possession in their offensive third and Katie Kilian got a shot off in the final minute to seal the 2-1 win.

Following the game, Tillman was named the Lady Barons' "Player of the Match" as she came in off the bench and had extremely productive time.  Tillman did exactly what the coaches had asked of her and helped Franciscan secure the win.

Franciscan outshot Hilbert 30-7 while holding a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Junior Sarah Luebking earned the win in goal.

Franciscan continues AMCC action as the Lady Barons host Pitt.-Greensburg on Tuesday at 4:15.
