Barons Tie Program Single-Game Goal Record in Win over Hilbert

Box Score

STEUBENVILLE – The Barons tied a program single-game goal record as the Franciscan men's soccer team rolled by Hilbert, 8-2, in the AMCC opener for both teams, Saturday.

The eight goals tied Franciscan's record, most recently accomplished on September 4, 2015, at Thiel. The Barons assisted on seven of the eight goals for both the second most points in a single game and second most assists.

Hilbert got off the first two shots of the game but both were off target before the Barons took over. Senior Leo Herrmann put the first Baron shot on goal but the diving Hilbert goalie deflected the ball back into play. Freshman Sebastian Koehler was set up perfectly and chipped in the deflection for his first collegiate goal and the 1-0 lead just 3:10 into action. Franciscan forced a turnover on Hilbert's next possession at midfield and senior Dominic Vander Woude sent a deep pass into the box and freshman JP Bobak finished it off to give FUS a 2-0 lead 21 seconds after the team's first goal.

Just under five minutes later, Vander Woude sent another long pass into the box, this time Herrmann pulled the goalie out as he charged in and shot the ball over his reach to give Franciscan a 3-0 lead.

The Barons continued to maintain possession and control the pace of play and after almost a complete line change for Franciscan; the Barons were able to push their lead to 4-0. Junior Jude Ledyard hit a long pass from about 35 yards out on the far sideline to freshman Gustavo Gutierrez who got around the last defender and drew the goalie out far enough that he could flick the ball over his reach and score.

Senior keeper Thomas Dosedel was put to the test with just over 12 minutes to play in the first as he had to make two quick saves to keep Hilbert off of the board.

The Barons took their next possession and worked methodically down the field and earned a pair of corner kicks back to back. On the second corner, Gutierrez took the corner and lifted into the box where several Barons were lying in wait. Senior Cuyler Ledyard got the first touch on the ball and as the goalie was diving to his left, Ledyard put the ball past the goalie to his right. The Barons led 5-0 with 11:25 left in the first.

Hilbert got on the board just five minutes later as Brandon Bundschuh gained possession of a loose ball at midfield and drove down the field and shot one on one with Dosedel, lifting it just out of his reach to cut the Baron lead down to 5-1.

Both teams switched goalies at the half and it was the Hilbert goalie who was put to the test right away. Franciscan's first two shots went wide before the new keeper stopped a header from Herrmann. 8:29 into the second, Koehler put a short pass into the box and Herrmann flicked it into the far right corner to push the Baron lead back to five goals.

After an unfortunate play that led to a Baron own goal, Franciscan's lead was cut to 6-2.

Once again, head coach Christian Bobak made a full sale sub and the fresh legs came in and put the final touches on the 8-2 win. Senior Hans Baldau scored his first goal as a Baron as he collected the ball off the foot of a defender as he was trying to clear the ball and buried it in the middle of the goal.

Junior Michel Bobak finished it off as Baldau sent the perfect pass into the box and Bobak headed to ball into the net on the run for the 8-2 Baron win.

Franciscan outshot the Hawks 35-10 while Dosedel and John Bolster made two stops in the net.

The Barons continue in AMCC action as they host Pitt.-Greensburg on Tuesday for a 2pm game.
