Three First Half Goals Propel Barons to Win Over UPG

Box Score

STEUBENVILLE – The Franciscan men's soccer team used three first half-goals to carry the Barons to a 3-0 win over Pitt.-Greensburg, Tuesday afternoon.

Just as they opened the game against Hilbert last Saturday, the Barons wasted little time getting on the scoreboard first. This time it was sophomore Ian Baldau who tallied the first goal for Franciscan. Junior Michael Bobak corralled a ball in towards the back of the Baron offensive zone and chipped it up to senior Dominic Vander Woude. The Simponsville, KY native put the ball into the middle of the field for senior Cuyler Ledyard who one-timed it to Baldau for the score. The goal came at the 31-second mark.

Franciscan did not let up the pressure as they were awarded a pair of corner kicks and took three shots before the Bobcats could possess the ball in front of the Baron goal. Once the Bobcats got possession of the ball past midfield, the Baron backline was able to protect the net and allowed just one shot that went wide in the first 20 minutes of action.

After a corner kick from UPG went wide past the net, Franciscan was able to systematically move the ball upfield and create a scoring opportunity. Freshman JP Bobak took control of the play as a Bobcat defender tried to clear the ball and from the goal line sent the ball up to Baldau who was charging the net to set up his second goal of the game and fifth of the season at the 20:53 mark.

Franciscan got off four more shots before the Bobcats registered their next one as the high-powered Baron offense never slowed down. With just under two minutes to play in the first, UPG did get off the best scoring chance the Bobcats had in the first, but senior keeper Thomas Dosedel stopped Jared Jenkin's shot to keep the shutout intact.

Just over 20 seconds later, the ball was once again in the Baron offensive third and sophomore Jacob Rigaud was pressuring the goalie. As Rigaud as getting a shot off, the Steubenville, OH native took a tough foul that set up a Baron penalty kick. Sophomore Joseph Leonardi was up for the task as he buried his first PK and the Barons' fifth of the season to give FUS a 3-0 lead.

The five penalty kick goals this season for Franciscan sets the program's single-season record.

The Baron pressure didn't stop in the second half but the Bobcat keeper was able to keep Franciscan off the board in the second half. Franciscan out-shot Greensburg 26-9 for the game and 14-6 in the second.

Dosedel turned in his second clean sheet of the semester and first in AMCC action as he posted four saves in his sixth win of the year.

Senior Leo Herrmann led the Barons while the Franciscan Man of the Match, Ian Baldau, and JP Bobak finished with five shots each.

Franciscan hits the road on Saturday to kick off a two-game road trip as the Barons face D'Youville on Saturday in a 1pm AMCC contest.
