Lady Barons Shut Out D'Youville

Box Score

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Franciscan women's soccer team improved to 2-1 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference as the Lady Barons handed D'Youville 1-0 loss on the road, Saturday afternoon.

After a scoreless first half, the Lady Barons took the 1-0 lead just 4:03 into the second half. After a Katie Kilian corner kick, the Lady Barons continued to possess the ball and eventually worked it back into the box. Emily Wieszczek handed the ball off to junior Elizabeth Dawyot. The junior took an open shot inside the box to give the Lady Barons the 1-0 advantage.

The Spartans took three of the game's next four shots but junior keeper Sarah Luebking turned all three shots away to keep the shutout intact.

"Sarah played another great game in the back of the net for us," remarked head coach Clare McBane. "She really worked hard and was the anchor of our defense today. Sarah earned this shutout and had some really great stops."

The Lady Barons kept the pressure up and continued to build through the midfield to get good shots at the end but couldn't get another ball past the Spartan keeper. On the other side of the field, Luebking continued to make stops including her last of the game at 85:47 to keep her shutout safe.

Senior Megan Luiso got off the last shot of the game at 88:04 but her shot was stopped and the 1-0 win was sealed for the Lady Barons.

D'Youville out-shot the Lady Barons 16-12 but the Lady Barons put seven of their 12 shots on target.

"The girls really fought hard today," remarked Coach McBane. "They really played to their strengths today and played their own game which was exciting. I was really pleased with the improvement on both sides of the field today.

We had beautiful builds through the middle and got the ball into the box and took the shot. I am still looking ahead and would like to see even better finishing and get an even better shot off to start scoring more so we can see the fruits of our labor. But I am very pleased with what we saw today."

Sophomore Hannah Doyle was named the Lady Barons Player of the Match as she had a solid performance today at center midfield. "Hannah played all 90 minutes today for the first time and really helped us build in the midfield and get those scoring opportunities."

Franciscan improved to 2-1 in the AMCC and 4-6 overall for the year as the Lady Barons continue into conference play.

"It was really exciting for the girls to get this win," continued Coach McBane. "To be able to come out here, on the road, and hold onto a 1-0 lead shows that the girls are growing and developing and that is really encouraging. This was just a great confidence booster heading into our next game."

Franciscan continues its short road trip as the Lady Barons head to La Roche on Wednesday for a 4:15 pm contest.
