SOUTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC – The Franciscan softball team picked up another full day sweep as the Lady Barons defeated Alfred State 12-0 in the opening game before blanking Keystone 5-0 in the afternoon contest, Wednesday.

On a day that was scheduled as an off day, the Lady Barons took advantage of the chance to play two with a pair of dominant performances in the circle from sophomore Jayln Effertz and hot bats up and down the lineup.

Franciscan jumped out to an 11-0 lead in the first game will an 11-run first inning against the Pioneers. Sophomore Kayla Anderson drove in the first run of the game with a bases-loaded walk that brought home freshman Allyson Weiss. Sophomores Kathleen Thompson and Dennise Carrazco scored on a pair of wild pitches before Anderson herself scored on a pitch that went wide. Freshman Victoria Clute walked with junior Anna Ames on second and ball four went past the catcher, far enough for Ames to come around to score to give Franciscan a 5-0 lead. After Clute stole second and third, freshman Andi Queen singled to center to score Clute with just the second hit of the inning. With two on, Weiss came up for the second time in the inning and laced the ball to right to score Effertz and Queen for the 8-0 Franciscan lead. Weiss eventually scored on a Pioneer throwing error before Carrazco scored Thompson on a triple down the rightfield line and Anderson brought Carrazco home on a groundout to third for the 11-0 lead.

The Franciscan defense stopped everything behind Effertz as no Pioneer got past second until the fourth inning and the Barons kept Alfred State off of the board.

"Jayln pitched two really good games today, and we played solid defense behind her only committing one error on the day," remarked head coach James Walker. "In game one we got contributions from everyone as we were able to play everyone that dressed for the game and eight different players scored at least one run."

Anderson scored the final run of the game on a wild pitch in the fourth inning.

Franciscan played its first full seven-inning game of the season as the Lady Barons defeated Keystone 5-0. The Lady Barons jumped out to an early lead once again as Anderson singled home Weiss in the first inning. Franciscan added three more runs in the third before capping the scoring with a run in the top of the fifth. Once again, the Lady Baron defense was solid behind Effertz, playing perfect softball and Effertz allowed just three hits while striking out two and walking three.

"Wheeze [Allyson Weiss] continued to be on fire today - she seems to be standing next to me at third base every time I turn around," remarked Coach Walker. "She really makes our offense exciting when she gets on base."

Weiss once picked up six stolen bases between the two games today, including four against Keystone.

Franciscan looks to continue its hot streak as the Lady Barons take on St. Joseph's and Wesley tomorrow in Myrtle Beach.
