While the offense was clicking on all cylinders for the for the Lady Barons, the defense made it possible for Franciscan to settle into its offensive schemes. Lead the Lady Baron defense was junior Elizabeth Jordan with a career day. Jordan finished the day with seven ground balls, four draw controls, and an impressive eight caused turnovers. The eight CTs sets a Franciscan single-game record, breaking the previous mark of six held by senior Mary Krolicki.

The Lady Baron offense got to work quickly and scored a pair of goals in the first five minutes of action. Krolicki scored the first two goals of the game and both offensive possessions were kicked off by a caused turnover by Jordan. Hilbert got one back with 22:44 to play in the first but never found an equalizer as junior Carly McDonald answered the Hawk goal with her first of the game. Once again the Lady Barons found themselves on offense thanks to the defensive work by Jordan.

After another Hilbert goal kept the Hawks within one, McDonald used a pass from Krolicki to push the FUS lead back to two and scored her third goal of the game with 6:55 to give Franciscan a 5-2 lead. Junior Treise McCarthy gave Franciscan their largest lead of the half as she scored her first of the game off a free position shot with 4:03 to play. Hilbert scored with 2:49 to trim the lead back to three but head's up play by junior Brittany Bain in goal kept the Lady Baron lead at three, 6-3. Bain made a pair of tough saves with less than five seconds to play before halftime.

Krolicki took advantage of a man-up situation for the Lady Barons to score her third of the game and freshman Maria Hilkert got on the score sheet with her first off a pass from McDonald.

Hilbert subsequently went on a three-goal run to get back to within two, 8-6, with 22:23 to play but Franciscan answered with a four-goal run of its own to take control of the game. McDonald kicked off the run that included a goal from junior Elizabeth McEntee and Hilkert in the middle and ended with senior Bridget Clune's first career goal. Hilbert halted the run with three-straight goals to cut the lead back down to three, but that would be as close as the Hawks got to Franciscan as the Lady Barons closed out the game with back-to-back goals from Hilkert and Krolicki.
