Barons improve to 2-0 in conference play

Box Score

STEUBENVILLE - The Franciscan University men's tennis improved to 2-0 in conference play on Friday, courtesy of a 9-0 victory over Pitt.-Bradford.

Senior captain Jarek Sulak and sophomore Jake Haffner faced quality competition at the No. 1 doubles spot. Up 4-3 and a break of serve, the duo rattled off four f the next five games to take the pro set. Haffner took over the net in the process.

Seniors Connor Jooste and John Gallagher delivered their second-straight 8-0 victory in as many days; the duo never faced a break point, and broke serve for the win.

Freshman Luke Conrad and junior Jack Galla took care of business at the No. 3 doubles spot; they turned in a 8-1 victory on the third court behind selective net aggression and smart tennis. Conrad's topspin-laden groundstrokes paired well with Galla's net consistency.

Up 3-0 at the conclusion of doubles play, the Barons quickly took the courts for singles.

Jooste quickly contributed Franciscan's fourth point of the evening, a 6-0, 6-0 showing that saw him quickly put away his No. 4 singles opponent. Jooste's net consistency quickly put the match out of reach.

Gallagher won 15 straight points to open the second set after a 6-0 first set. He didn't face a break point before registering another 6-0 set for the win, clinching the fifth point for the Barons.

Haffner soon followed suit on the first court, registering a 6-1, 6-1 victory at the No. 1 singles spot. Haffner repeatedly found alternating corners with penetrating groundstrokes, before finishing points at the net. The sophomore served the match out for the win. Sulak's soon registered a win of his own just one court down, with a 6-1, 6-3 victory at the No. 2 singles spot.

After Conrad put down his No. 5 singles opponent 6-1, 6-0 with impressive groundstrokes consistency, especially on the backhand side, it was up to Galla's No. 6 singles matchup to deliver the sweep. The junior put a 6-0, 6-1 score into the books, serving big down the stretch. He transformed baseline consistency into winners off the forehand side, and mixed in the slice late in the match. Galla also found opportunities to close at the net before the match reached its conclusion.

After the match, selectively attentive storytelling talent Stephen Bolster remarked "Wow."

The Barons will face tough non-conference competition on Sunday, April 8 at 12:30 p.m. against Case Western Reserve.
