STEUBENVILLE – The Franciscan softball team wrapped up its regular season with a doubleheader split with Pitt.-Greensburg, Wednesday afternoon. The Lady Barons took the first game 11-2 before dropping the nightcap 14-5.
Franciscan jumped out a 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a two-run double from sophomore Kayla Anderson. Sophomore Anna Fluharty and freshman Allyson Weiss came around to score on the one-out double. Freshman Andi Queen kept the Bobcats off the board in the top of the second with a 1-2-3 inning, thanks to a pair of groundouts, to maintain the 2-0 lead.
The Lady Barons added to their lead in the bottom of the second as Franciscan plated four runs on four hits and one Greensburg error. Senior Lindsey Finch led off the frame with a bunt single before freshman Ally Kuntz drew a walk. The pair completed a successful double steal to take second and third and attempted a second double steal in the same play as Finch took home but Kuntz was caught at third. With the bases empty and one out, sophomore Dennise Carrazco singled and stole second to get into scoring position. Classmate Kathleen Thompson doubled to left field to bring home Carrazco and give Franciscan a 4-0 lead. Thompson stole third to get one base closer to home but it would all be for moot as sophomore Allyson Weiss sent her fifth home run of the season over the left field fence to give FUS a 6-0 lead.
The Bobcats got one back in the top of the third with a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 6-1. The Lady Barons fell prey to a rare 1-2-3 inning in the third before Greensburg scored its last run of the game as the Bobcats scored on an RBI-single in the top of the fourth.
Franciscan ended the game with a five-run sixth inning to take the 11-2 lead. With runners on the corners, Anderson stole second and drew the throw to get Fluharty home and give FUS a 7-2 lead. Anderson then stole third with junior Anna Ames up to bat. Ames grounded out to second and Anderson came home. Sophomore Ashley Kondracki and Finch drew back-to-back walks to put two runners on and completed a double steal to get two runners in scoring position. Kuntz grounded out to third and allowed Kondracki to come home. After Carrazco walked and stole second, Thompson singled to center and brought home Finch and Carrazco to end the game 11-2 in favor of Franciscan in the sixth inning.
The Bobcats took a 1-0 lead in the second game in the top of the first with an RBI double but Franciscan answered in the bottom of the frame to take a 2-1 lead. Kondracki singled with the bases loaded as Anderson and Thompson came home. Kayla Bayus tried to tie the game in the top of the second by Fluharty reached over the fence to rob Bayus of a home run and keep Franciscan in the lead.
The Bobcats were able to take the lead in the top of the third with an RBI-double and a two-run home run as Greensburg led 5-2 after three innings.
Queen got the Lady Barons back to within one as she hit a single that brought home, Kondracki. After Greensburg scored a run in the top of the fifth, Fluharty sent a ball over the centerfield fence to keep Franciscan within one run after five innings.
The Bobcats broke the game open with eight runs in the top of the sixth and Franciscan was unable to answer as the game ended 14-5 in favor of Greensburg after six innings.
The Lady Barons wrap up the regular season with a 14-14 record, setting the program's win record. Franciscan awaits the outcome of the final games around the AMCC tomorrow to find out about their spot in the AMCC tournament.
