Bobak's Goal Leads Barons Past W&J

Box Score

WASHINGTON, Pa. – Senior Michael Bobak (Grand Island, NY/Canisius) scored with less than five minutes to play in regulation to lift the Franciscan men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Washington & Jefferson, Wednesday night.

JP Bobak (Grand Island, NY/Canisius) set up the goal as he tracked down a ball sent into the box by freshman Nick Miller (Galena, Ohio/Olentangy). JP Bobak got a shot off from the right side of the box that President keeper Nick Stasko was able to save but deflected by into play. Michael Bobak was there to collect the rebound and take advantage of an empty left post and scored the game's only goal and his first of the season.

Despite giving up a corner just six seconds after play resumed following the goal, the Baron defense was able to contain the high-powered President offense and not allow another shot off and sophomore keeper Brian Gaughan (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton) turned in his second shutout of the season. Gaughan had a game-saving save just six minutes prior to the Baron goal as Matt Kotkiewicz put the ball on net from a tough angle, but Gaughan dove out to save the shot and deflected it back to a Baron defender.

Gaughan finished the day with five saves while Stasko made six saves in net for W&J.

The first half was was just as evenly matched as the second but neither team could find the back of the net. The Presidents led 9-8 in shots in the first 45 minutes but Franciscan held a 14-13 advantage for the game. W&J held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks as Franciscan was not awarded a corner in the second half while the Presidents earned three in the second and three in the first.

JP Bobak led the Barons in shots with four while Miller and sophomore Sebastian Koehler (Ashburn, VA/Seton Home Study) each had three.

Franciscan will open Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference action on Saturday as the Barons host Medaille for a 4:15 pm contest.

Game Note: The last time the Barons beat the Presidents was in 2008 when now head coach Christian Bobak and assistant coach Zeph Swope took the field for Franciscan. Coach Bobak assisted Swope's goal late in the second half for the FUS win. This time, it was younger brother sophomore JP Bobak who assisted the game-winning goal – which happened to come from his brother, Michael.
