Barons Drop First Two Matches of the Season

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Franciscan men's tennis team dropped its first two matches of the 2018-19 season to non-conference opponents Allegheny (9-0) and Grove City (8-1) at the Nancy & Harvey Heath Invitational hosted by Allegheny, Saturday.

Freshman Gary Pierre registered the only point of the day for the Barons as he won his No. 1 singles match against Grove City, 6-1, 6-4. Pierre was on the verge of a No. 1 singles against Allegheny in the earlier match, but his opponent won the tie-break, 10-6, after Pierre came back and won the second set, 6-3. The freshman dropped the first set 6-1.

Junior Walter Matt battled in his No. 2 singles match against Grove City but ultimately fell in the tie break, 10-5, after coming back and winning the second set, 6-4.

Freshman Billy Presume also pushed his opponent to a tie break at No. 3 singles against Grove City. Presume won the first set, 6-1, and his counterpart took the second set 6-4. Grove City's Miguel Esteban Diaz won the match after a 11-9 tiebreak win.

The Barons look to pick up their first win of the year as they host Pitt.-Bradford at 1:00 pm at Belleview Courts.
