STEUBENVILLE - Franciscan women's basketball team used a 23-14 fourth quarter to solidified its first Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference of the season over Penn St-Behrend on Saturday. The Lady Barons defeated the Lions 67-57 on Saturday.
This was the first win over Penn St.-Behrend since February 7, 2015 for the women's basketball team. It was the first win against the Lions in Steubenville, and the largest margin of victory in school history for the women's basketball team.
The Lady Barons started the game off with a quick jump shot from freshman Angela Starre. Possession in the first quarter bounced back and forth between both teams. Each time Franciscan scored, Penn St.-Behrend answered. The score was tied consecutively throughout the first, but the Lions took the lead to close out the quarter, 19-18.
The Lions opened the quarter with a good bucket, stretching their lead. The Lady Barons responded, staying within six points the entire quarter. Senior Gaby De Jesus contributed to the offensive effort with a three-pointer which helped cut down the lead. Penn St.-Behrend ended the first half with a lead of only three points, 32-29.
Although the Lady Barons were outscored in the first half, they were persistent and continued to push offensively. This mentality helped Franciscan to its comeback. The Lions took an 11-point lead in the third quarter, but with three minutes left, the Lady Barons went on an 11-point scoring run. Penn St.-Behrend did not score for the last three minutes of the third quarter and the score was tied 44-44 going into the final 10 minutes.
Both teams possessed leads throughout the fourth quarter. Good layups and jump shots from junior Abby Baierl and freshman Grace Godich contributed to Franciscan's lead. Three minutes into the final quarter, the Lady Barons took the eight-point lead, and continued to stride forward offensively. Franciscan began transitioning on Penn St.-Behrend, adding to the offensive effort. The Lady Barons stretched their margin and finished the game with a 10-point lead. The final score was 67-57.
The Lady Barons shot 44.6% from the field, and 66.7% from the three-point line. Baierl led the team in points with 17. Starre put up her second double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 boards.
Franciscan will host their next AMCC tilt against Penn St.-Altoona on Wednesday, January 16 at 6 PM.
