Lady Barons Fall to Hilbert on Buzzer Beater

HAMBURG, NY - The Lady Barons came up short Saturday afternoon in conference matchup with Hilbert. After a comeback from a rough first quarter, the Lady Barons took the lead in the third quarter and built off of their momentum into the fourth quarter. After a valiant effort, Franciscan took the tough loss with a score of 47-45 after a buzzer beater fell for the Hawks.

The first quarter was troublesome for the Lady Barons who put up consecutive missed shots. A good free throw from freshman freshman Grace Godich put Franciscan on the board. A second free throw from junior Kaitlyn Sonneberger was the last point scored in the quarter for Franciscan. Hilbert did not hesitate to put up two jump shots, taking the early lead. A turnover by freshman Angela Starre gave the Hawks a breakaway layup adding to their lead. Missed jump shots and turnovers set the Lady Barons behind. Hilbert closed out the first quarter comfortably with a score of 14-2.

The tide turned in the second quarter. Franciscan allowed only two buckets from Hilbert. The Lady Barons took the offensive initiative with a quick three-pointer from Starre. Sonneberger had a good jump shot that helped cut at the Hawk's lead. Several key jump shots from the paint put Franciscan within six points to close out the first half. The Hawks led 18-12 at the break.

The Lady Barons used the momentum from their successful second quarter to take the lead in the third. Franciscan opened the half with a jump shot from Starre and two good free throws from Sonneberger, putting the Lady Barons behind by only a bucket. Another jump shot form Starre tied the game. Franciscan took the lead after several turnovers from the Hawks. A three-pointer from Tessa Crider helped the Lady Barons gain their lead. Franciscan closed out the quarter with a lead of 36-29. The Lady Barons outscored the Hawks 24-11.

Hilbert did not back down to Franciscan's offensive run. The Hawks quickly answered with a jump shot to start the fourth quarter, putting them behind by only five points. Good layups in the paint and a jump shot from Sonneberger helped the Lady Barons' lead grow. The Hawks were quick to respond and were soon became an offensive threat. A good jump shot for Hilbert put them within one point of Franciscan. With thirteen seconds left, the game was tied 45-45. The Hawks had the ball underneath their own hoop with three seconds left. After the inbound, there was a missed jump shot. Hilbert rebounded the ball and made a buzzer beater jump shot in the paint, taking the win out from under the Lady baron's feet.

The Lady Barons shot 31.5% from the field and 50% from the free throw line. Angela Starre led the team with eighteen points and contributed five boards. Sonneberger led the team in rebounds with nine boards.

Franciscan wraps up its three-game road trip to open 2019 on Wednesday when the Lady Barons travel to La Roche for a 6:00 pm AMCC tilt.
