The Short Story: An undefeated, perfect conference season culminated in an AMCC Championship for the fourth year in a row.
Â
How it Happened
- Franciscan opened up the day with another sweep in doubles. Madelyn Conrad and Grace Hammel took care of business in their last AMCC Championship, winning in a tight one 8-6. Ana Victoria Haddad and Zoey Stapleton cruised to an 8-1 win in #2 doubles. The freshman duo, Estelle Leon and Haley Davinsizer, remained perfect on the year in AMCC doubles as they won 8-3 in #3 doubles.
- Franciscan entered singles play only needing two wins to secure the Championship, and a pair of freshman delivered for the Barons. Zoey Stapleton and Caroline Picard closeout their opponents, 6-0, 6-0, in #5 and #6 singles to clinch the title. Madelyn Conrad, Ana Victoria Haddad, Estelle Leon, and Grace Hammel each had won their first sets as action was ended.
- This completed the historic four peat for the Barons, something of which the professional sports leagues have very few references to over the years. The New York Yankees have pulled it off twice in the 1930's and 1940's. The Bostons Celtics won eight straight Championships from 1959-1966. It hasn't been done in college football since the 1940's.Â
Comments from Coach
"Today was the culmination of a lot of hard work, determination and grit from this group of ladies," commented Coach Greve after the championship. "These seniors have really bought into our program goals, and it filters all the way to our underclass athletes." "This is truly a phenomenal team to come back from setbacks they faced early on this season."Â
Up Next
The Barons will not get a chance to compete for another AMCC Championship as they will join the Presidents Athletic Conference (PAC) next season. This concludes Franciscan's fall schedule, they return March 22 at Heidelberg, as they make preparations for the NCAA Tournament later in the spring.Â
