BUFFALO, NY - In the Franciscan women's basketball team's final game of the 2018-19 season, the Lady Barons fell short of the win. Franciscan had a choppy second quarter against conference matchup D'Youville College, and the Spartans cruised to an 82-67 win Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Barons started the first quarter trailing, but never allowed D'Youville to reach anything higher than a five-point lead. Freshman
Angela Starre had a total of six points in the first quarter, all from the free throw line. The Lady Barons closed the first quarter with a tied score of 12-12.
The Spartans reclaimed their previous lead, putting up a quick five points to start the second quarter. A good three-pointer form senior Reagan Stead put the Lady Barons within two points of D'Youville. The Spartans answered Stead's spark with two three-pointers of their own. D'Youville stretched its lead to 10 points with a breakaway layup. Made layups and jump shots for the Lady Barons inched them closer to the lead. The Spartans ended the first half with a 10-point lead over the Lady Barons, 33-23.
D'Youville opened the second half with a three-pointer. Franciscan did not hesitate to respond, putting up two points. Possession bounced back and forth, but the Spartans held their 10-point lead. The Lady Barons fought valiantly with contributions from Stead and Starre. Both players added to the offensive effort. The closest the Lady Barons came to tying up the score in the third quarter was seven points. A buzzer beater three-pointer from
Rebekah Nevarez put Franciscan within 12-points of the leading Spartans after the third.
In the fourth quarter, the Spartans outscored the Lady Barons 23-20. Junior
Kaitlyn Sonneberger and
Abby Baierl added to the offensive effort. Baierl scored the final points of the game, with a fast break layup. The Lady Barons fell in their last game to the D'Youville Spartans 82-67. Freshman
Angela Starre totaled 21 points for the night.
The Lady Barons wrapped up their season with a record of 2-22, and 2-16 in conference. Franciscan averaged 51.8 points per game and averaged 34% from the floor for the course of the season. The Lady Barons averaged 69.1% of their free throw shots as well.
