NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC – The Franciscan softball team took to the field for two games today, first against Keystone before facing off against Cairn. The Lady Barons won both, first earning an 11-6 victory in the opener against Keystone before taking the second game 4-3 from Cairn.
The Lady Barons took control of the first game, racking up 11 runs off 15 hits. Sophomore
Andi Queen started the game and threw 6.1 innings and earned her first win of the season.
In the first inning, Keystone State plated the first run of the game. The Lady Barons struck offensively in the top of the third inning when junior
Kathleen Thompson singled to left field, and sophomore
Allyson Weiss scored. Junior
Dennise Carrazco singled to shortstop, and advanced to second on the throw, and Thompson scored. Freshman
Anna Swierczewski reached on an error by the, and Carrazco scored. Freshman
Faith Pokryfke singled to center field, and Swierczewski scored. Keystone scored two more runs in the bottom of the third inning.
The Lady Barons added four more runs in the sixth inning with singles from freshman
Jenny Massey,
Rachel Cooper, and sophomore
Allyson Weiss. Kat Thompson tripled, clearing the bases and adding to the Lady Barons' lead. The Lady Barons scored three more runs in the seventh inning to take an 11-3 lead. The Giants got three runs back in the bottom of the seventh by freshman
Sarah Keating came out in relief to get the final two outs and seal the Lady Baron 11-6 win. Queen earned her first win of the season.
In the second game, the softball team faced Cairn University. Keating started the game for the Lady Barons. It was a scoreless game until the fourth inning when Carrazco scored off a sacrifice fly from Pokryfke. Swierczewski also scored off a single from Massey. Senior
Anna Ames scored unearned off an error in the field made by Cairn.
The Lady Barons held the 4-0 lead until the top of the seventh when Cairn scored two unearned runs and one earned run. The Lady Barons shut down the scoring run and finished the game with a score of 4-3. Keating completed her second game and earned her second win of the season. The Lady Barons are now 3-1 overall.
Franciscan will continue tomorrow against Spalding University at 9:30 AM and against Centenary University at 1:30 PM in North Myrtle, SC.
