SOUTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC – The Franciscan softball team closed out their spring training week with two victories. Franciscan opened the day with a 12-2 win over Clarks Summit before wrapping up the week with a 9-1 win over Norwich.
The Lady Barons took control of the beginning of each game, scoring multiple runs to gain control early in the game. First, the Lady Barons faced Clarks Summit College in the early game.
Franciscan went into the game prepared to strike early. The scoring began when junior
Dennise Carrazco scored when freshman
Jenny Massey doubled to left field. Freshman
Faith Pokryfke singled to left center, scoring Massey. The Lady Barons continued to score in the first inning, racking up seven runs. Clarks Summit came back in the bottom of the first and scored its first run of the game. The Lady Barons came back in the second inning and scored four more runs. In the third inning, the Lady Barons were winning 12-1. By the bottom of the fourth inning, Franciscan was winning by 13 runs. The Lady Barons mercy-ruled Clarks Summit with a score of 15-2 after five innings.
The Lady Barons faced Norwich University in their second and final game of the day. In the second game, freshman
Rachel Cooper got the scoring going in the first inning with a triple to bring home sophomore
Allyson Weiss. On a sacrifice fly from Carrazco, Cooper scored. Norwich University scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the first inning. The Lady Barons went on to score three more runs in the second inning off a triple by Weiss and a single from Cooper. The Franciscan softball team continued to score in the fourth inning, scoring enough runs to mercy-rule their second team of the day. The final score of the game was 9-1. Freshman
Jenny Massey almost hit for the cycle, only needing a homerun to complete it. Nevertheless, Massey had several key hits and had two RBIs for the game.
The Lady Barons had 24 hits for the day and scored 24 runs. The Franciscan softball team will continue their season on Wednesday, March 20 at 3:30 pm when they host Waynesburg in a non-conference double header.
