STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – The Franciscan women's tennis team dropped a hard-fought match to visiting Westminster on Friday to open the 2019-20 season.
Freshman duo of
Estelle Leon and
Haley Davinsizer won a 7-2 tie break at No. 3 doubles to take the match 8-7 and pick up the first point of the match for Franciscan.
In singles, freshman
Caroline Picard was the second match off the courts at No. 6 as she picked up her first collegiate win with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over her Titan opponent. Junior
Zoey Stapleton picked up the third point for the Lady Barons as she won 1-6, 7-5, 10-4 at No. 4 singles and was the fourth match to finish.
Leon split the first two sets at No. 5 singles with Leon winning the first 6-2 and Sabrina Slagle taking the second 6-3. In a back-and-forth affair, Slagle edged out Leon with a 10-4 win in the tie break to hand Westminster the match win.
Junior
Ana Victoria Haddad Garcia was engaged in a very exciting No. 2 singles match as the courts around her were finished. Haddad-Garcia dropped the first set 6-1 before rebounding for a 6-2 win in the second and forcing a tie-break. Haddad-Garcia used the momentum from the second set to propel her to a 10-8 win in the tie break.
Franciscan will return to the courts on Tuesday as the Lady Barons host Baldwin Wallace at 3:30 pm at the Belleview Courts.
