Herrera Makes at Run at ITA Regionals in Saint Louis

Box Score SAINT LOUIS - Four Barons made the trip to Saint Louis to compete in the ITA Regionals for the first time in program history. 

Doubles
     Franciscan had two doubles teams represented in the ITA main draw this weekend. The top pair of Maria Herrera and Olivia Colby had the most success. They won their opening matchup by a score of 8-5 over a pairing from Augustana College. Claire Cardie and Kina Ehlers dropped their first round matchup to a talented duo from Denison College. In the Round of 32, Herrera and Colby battled but fell to the University of Chicago's top pair by a score of 8-2. 

    In the consolation bracket, Ehlers and Cardie fell to a pair from Princpia College by a score of 8-4. Colby and Herrera qould also fall by a score of 8-3 to Case Western Reserve to end Franciscan's weekend for doubles play. 

Singles
    Franciscan would have Maria Herrera and Olivia Colby in the ITA main draw for singles. Claire Cardie played in the red bracket, and Kina Ehlers was placed in the green bracket for the weekend. In the ITA main draw, Maria Herrera and Olivia Colby each dropped their first round matchups. Colby would then end her weekend with a loss in the consolation bracket, but Herrera would just be getting started. In the round of 32 in the consolation bracket, she defeated Catriona McIntosh from Kenyon College in straight sets. She then followed that up with a win over Morgan Dobos from John Carroll in a back forth thriller. She won 6-3, 4-6, 10-8 to earn a spot in the consolation quarterfinals. That is where she met Denison's Peyton Oda. Herrera dropped the first set 7-5 before winning the next set 6-3. She then pulled out the third set by a score of 12-10 to head to the semifinals. Herrera squared off against Radha Patel from Case Western Reserve. Herrera won the first set by a score of 6-3, but then fell 6-1 in the second. Patel stood strong in the final set to just barely edge out Herrera 10-6. Patel went on to win the consolation bracket.

    In the green bracket, Kina Ehlers won her first round matchup against Ivy Walker from Kalamazoo in straight sets. Then in the round of 16, she fell to Lauren Khou from University of Chicago in straight sets. In the red bracket, Claire Cardie would fall to a player from the host Washington University to find herself in the consolation side. That is where she earned her first win of the weekend with an 8-4 win over Bailey Higgins from Webster University. In the semifinal match, she fell to John Carroll's Felicity Kolb by a score of 8-6 to end her run. 

Next Up
Franciscan  Women's Tennis looks to finish their regular season this week with four matches over five days with three being conference matchups. It all gets started at Thiel on Wednesday afternoon when they take on the Tomcats. A win will clinch a spot in the PAC Championship Tournament that is slated to start on October 11th. The Barons are 2-0 all-time against the Tomcats with a a pair of conference wins by a combined score of 17-1.
