How It Happened
#10 Franciscan traveled to #7 Geneva for the first round of the 2022 PAC Women's Basketball Championship Tournament on Monday night. The Lady Barons gave the Golden Tornadoes all they could handle and almost pulled off the upset. Felicia MacGillivray led all scorers with 24 points.
A back and forth start to this one set the score at 3-3 after three minutes of play. Geneva would then go on a 7-2 run to take an early five point lead. Franciscan caught fire in the final two minutes of the first quarter, as a 10-1 lead would give them a four point lead of their own to end the quarter. Felicia MacGillivray scored seven points in the late run, including one three pointer.
Both teams started off the second quarter slow on the offensive end of the floor, but then Geneva would go on a run to take a four point lead of their own with five minutes left in the quarter. Kimberly McDaniels and Ilena Gonzales would add a couple buckets to keep the Lady Barons close, until a Geneva 10-0 run would give the Golden Tornadoes a 12 point lead. Jazzlyn Melnyk added a pair of free throws late to cut the deficit to ten points at the half.
Both offenses were firing on all cylinders to start the third quarter. Lauren Arena got Franciscan's offense started at the free throw line, and Felicia MacGillivray added another three pointer. Madison Doan scored the next four Franciscan points to keep the Lady Barons in this one, and then Felicia MacGillivray connected from beyond the arc to cut the lead to eight points with five minutes to play in the quarter. MacGillivray had 12 points in just the third quarter, as the Lady Barons outscored the Golden Tornadoes to take a nine point deficit into the fourth quarter.
Geneva was able to stretch their lead up to 13 points after two minutes of action in the final quarter. The Lady Barons came roaring back, as a variety of scorers would help Franciscan climb back in this one. Madison Doan and Natalie Conner made one bucket each to cut this one to a single digit hole. Ilena Gonzales made her first three point bucket of the night, and Lauren Arena made a jumper to cut the lead to six points with six minutes to play. Felicia MacGillivray added a tough and one bucket, and Jazzlyn Melnyk made a pair of free throws, as the Lady Barons now trailed by two with three minutes to play. With two minutes left, Melnyk stole the inbound pass from Geneva, and then quickly made a layup to tie it up at 71-71. Geneva would then get the ball down the floor quickly and take the lead back on a driving layup. MacGillivray answered once more with an elbow jumper to tie it back up at 73-73. Geneva stepped up and made another clutch bucket to take a 75-73 edge with a minute and a half to play. The Lady Barons would get a couple of good looks, but they would not be able to make another bucket. Geneva would hit one free throw and hold on to win 76-73.
