MacGillivray Drops 26 in Heartbreaker Against Geneva

How It Happened 
    Franciscan hosted Geneva on Wednesday night in a PAC conference matchup. It was quite a thrilling game, as back and forth play kept the game within a possession all game long. Felicia MacGillivray would make five three pointers in route to a new career high 26 points.

    Geneva started off hot with a pair of three pointers to take a 6-0 lead. Jazzlyn Melnyk would get Franciscan on the board with her first made jumper. The Lady Barons would climb to within one point after a 6-0 run, as the score would be 10-9 with four minutes to play in the first quarter. Madison Doan added a layup and Felicia MacGillivray would add a three pointer to set the score at 16-14 with Geneva holding the slight edge. 

    Felicia MacGillivray would heat up in the second quarter, as she scored eight points in the first five minutes to tie this one up at 24-24. Jazzlyn Malynyk would give Franciscan their first lead on a tough driving layup to set their score at 26-24. Lauren Arena added four points down the stretch to to keep this one close, and then Jazzlyn Melnyk dropped her first three pointer of the night to send us to the half with a 33-29 lead.

    Franciscan quickly stretched the lead up to seven points at 38-31, thanks to three pointer from MacGillivray and a tough bucket from Doan. With 2:32 to play in the third quarter, Franciscan would reach their largest lead, as they held an eight point edge at 47-39. A 10-2 Golden Tornado run would send us to the fourth quarter all tied up at 49-49.

In the fourth, Franciscan scored the lone five points of the first four minutes, as Natalie Conner and Felicia MacGillivray each made a shot. Over the next three minutes, Geneva would fight back to tie this one up at 58-58. They would go on to take their first lead of the second half with 2:50 to play at 60-59. The Golden Tornadoes would control the lead the rest of the way which would force Franciscan to foul. Lauren Arena did cut the lead to two points at 67-65 with ten seconds left, but the Lady Barons would not pull the last second miracle. Geneva was strong from the free throw line and was able to close this one out. 

Inside the Numbers 
- 26 points is a new career high for Felicia MacGillivray.
- MacGillivray made six three pointers, which ties a program record for most in a game.
- Jazzlyn Melnyk scored a new career high 17 points.
- Lauren Arean added 11 points while shooting 50% from the floor.
- Geneva edged out Franciscan in the rebounding battle 47-45.

Up Next
Franciscan will get right back into action tomorrow, as they make the short trip to Bethany. This game was originally scheduled last month, but was postponed, and now rescheduled for back to back competitions for both teams. The Lady Barons fell 33-70 in their first meeting with the Bison, but that game was way back in December as the PAC opener. Madison Doan led the way for Franciscan with 14 points and nine rebounds. Lindsey Garrison led all scorers with 19 points for the Bison. Bethany is currently in 5th place in the PAC.

Franciscan University Athletics is partnering with Steubenville Conferences to offer summer sports camps in conjunction with the Steubenville Main Campus 1 (June 9-12th, 2022) and 3 (June 23-26th, 2022).
