How It Happened
It was another rainy night in Steubenville, Ohio and the Barons hosted the Oberlin Yeowomen for their fourth matchup. Oberlin has escaped the Barons for their first three meetings avoiding a loss. Tonight, the weather tested the athletes abilities to adjust, and the Barons capitalized on some early mistakes to grab a 1-0 lead in the first half and ride that through regulation.
The "ride" didn't go without it's scares. Late in the first half, the Yeowomen found a shooting lane and forced Giguere to make a diving save. Twice Oberlin collected a rebound and got a shot off on an empty net, but Giguere made a dive for the second shot after colliding with the first shot taker, then the defense stood in front of the third shot to prevent the equalizer.
Over halftime, coach wanted to emphasize their same game plan for the first half, focus on winning the first 15 minutes. The Barons executed, but didn't hang on to the momentum for the final 30. They found themselves on their heels defending for their lives for most of the second half. The Yeowomen had unrelenting pressure, but the Barons hung on and walked away with a shutout victory.
The heart pounding moments are a joy to experience as a fan albeit terrifying for a coach. He did say in his last post-game, he wants this team's identity to be a defensive-minded squad with shutouts as the goal every game prefers every game going this way. Maybe we root for these kind of games and see how many grey hairs he can collect with tight 1-0 wins for the rest of the year. Either way it is great to see the hard-work pay off and see this group come together and find success on the field.
The Barons will be back at home this Saturday to face Juniata college at 3:30pm.

By the Numbers
- Winogradoff grabbed her second goal of the season
- Giguere recorded two saves in her second shutout performance of the year
