Anita Hartzel begins her tenure at Franciscan University of Steubenville as the new athletic trainer for the 2017-18 athletic year.
Hartzel joins the Barons for the 2017-18 athletic year after serving as the rehabilitation coordinator and athletic trainer at Indiana Total Therapy in Indiana, PA for the last three years. While at Indiana Total Therapy, Hartzel aided in the rehabilitation and care of patients and helped physical therapists perform multipoint assessments throughout patients’ rehabilitation programs. She performed speed and agility training for athletes and health professional and assisted patients through multi-day return to play protocol for concussions. Hartzel was charged with the inventory and ordering of weekly supplies for the clinic while organizing a high patient load in a highly detail orientated and high pace environment.
From August 2015 to August of 2016, Hartzel served as an athletic trainer at Jamie’s Physical Therapy where she worked in both the clinical and high school setting. Hartzel was responsible for prevention and evaluation of acute and chronic injuries and designed a concussion management program and performed IMPACT testing for all athletes.
Prior to her time at Jamie’s, Hartzel was the athletic trainer for Apollo-Ridge High School and Union High School. During her stint at Union, Hartzel was responsible for the implementation of concussion programs and return to play protocol for the entire student body. She performed evaluations of injuries and designed appropriate rehabilitation programs for all athletes. Aside from daily athletic training duties, Hartzel was responsible for designing an emergency action plan for all facilities at Apollo-Ridge and maintained WPIAL physicals and documented all injuries.
Hartzel earned her masters of science in exercise physiology and health promotions from California University of Pennsylvania in 2016. During her education at California University, Hartzel was a graduate assistant athletic trainer at Edinboro University. She was primarily responsible for the football, women’s basketball, and women’s lacrosse teams, performing all athletic training duties necessary for those specific student-athletes. Hartzel earned her bachelor of science in athletic training from Duquesne University in 2011.
Hartzel is an NATABOC certified performance enhancement specialist and holds her CPR/AED certification through the American Heart Association and first aid certification from the Red Cross. Hartzel is bloodborne pathogen certified from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and has her confidentiality certification from the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. Hartzel is a Pennsylvania and Ohio licensed athletic trainer.
