STEUBENVILLE - The Franciscan's Women's Basketball team fought hard in the first quarter of the game on Wednesday night, but their key defensive rebounds and surges of scoring were not enough to put them above the Chatham as the Cougars won 82-55.
The Lady Barons won the tip-off, and
Raegan Stead scored their first two points after being fouled only 17 seconds into the game. Franciscan capitalized on its strong start with a six point scoring run. Chatham halted the scoring run with a deep three pointer, and pressured the Lady Barons' offense with a full court press. With five minutes left in the quarter, freshman
Angela Starre hit a three-pointer putting the Barons up 11-9. The Cougars took control over the next four minutes, but Starre hit a three pointer with a minute left.
Kaitlyn Sonneberger followed Starre's lead with a key steal and defensive rebound. The quarter ended with Chatham in the lead, 20-19.
Franciscan opened the second quarter with a jump shot from Sonneberger. Chatham answered with a 10-point scoring run. After a full time out, the Lady Barons made a pair of foul shots. Chatham continued to dominate in rebounding and transitions, leading the game 28-46 at halftime.
Entering the second half, Chatham took control with multiple offensive rebounds and several breakaways. The score was 69-40 going into the fourth quarter. The Lady Barons held possession briefly in the fourth, but the Cougars scored 13 points to end the game 82-55.
Starre led the Lady Barons for the second-straight game with 16 points and eight rebounds while Stead notched 10 points and two assists. The Lady Barons shot 36.8% (21-for-57) for the game and the Cougars held the rebounding advantage, 57-37.
The Lady Barons will host Grove City on Tuesday, November 20 at 6:00 PM.
