STEUBENVILLE – Despite a strong third quarter, in which the Franciscan women's basketball team posted 17 points in an effort to top Grove City Tuesday night, the Lady Barons fell to the Wolverines, 67-37.
Key defensive rebounds and steals in the third started Franciscan's scoring drive. Freshman
Angela Starre (Carrollton, OH/Carrollton) led the Lady Barons in points with 13, as she made several jump shots in the third quarter including a three-point in the corner as time expired to cut the lead to 51-28 going into the fourth. The Wolverines used a 16-9 fourth to close out the 67-37 win.
Grove City started the game with a strong first quarter, out-scoring the Lady Barons 23-2. A series of turnovers and missed shots gave Grove City the opportunity to obtain a substantial lead. The second quarter presented more opportunity for the Lady Barons to perform. The Lady Barons' defense pushed Grove City back, allowing the Wolverines to only score 13 points going into the half. Franciscan had quite the task ahead of them as Grove City held the lead at 36-11 at halftime.
After a successful third quarter, the Lady Barons entered the fourth quarter with high hopes. Starre hit a three-pointer with four minutes left in the game, giving the Lady Barons momentum. Cianna Vaughn followed Starre's lead and hit a jump shot. Franciscan did not give up, pushing to the last seconds of the game when Starre made a layup in the paint but the Wolverines held to their lead.
The Lady Barons were 14-50 from the floor and shot 18.2% form the three-point line. Starre led the Lady Barons with 13 points and six boards while freshman
Grace Godich (Bloomingdale, OH/Catholic Central) chipped in seven points and two rebounds.
"We are definitely a young team, but we are learning and getting better each time we take to the court," remarked head coach
Suzy Delaney follwing the game. "We are missing a few key players to injury but our freshmen are really stepping up and learning the game at the college level quickly. I am excited to see us get back to full strength to see what we really can do."
Franciscan will face Carnegie Mellon University Sunday, November 25 at 2 PM following the Thanksgiving Break.
