Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Late First Half Surge Leads Grove City Past Barons

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Franciscan men's basketball team built a five-point lead midway through the first half, but Grove City used a 18-7 run over the final 12 minutes of the opening period to propel the Wolverines to a 64-42 win, Tuesday evening.

Junior John Noce (Brewster, NY/John F. Kennedy Catholic) hit a free throw with 12:31 to play in the first to give Franciscan it's largest lead of the game, 9-4. Just over a minute and a half later, Grove City kicked off a 6-0 run to take its first lead of the game, 10-9, with 7:09 to play. Sophomore Sean Hickey (North Olmstead, OH/Holy Name) answered the Wolverine run with a jumper on the next Baron possession. The slim 11-10 lead for Franciscan would be short lived, however, as the Wolverines built a nine-point lead, 22-13, with less a minute to play in the first to take the lead for good. Junior Joe Schriner (Bluffton, OH/Bluffton) gave the Baron offense a spark heading into the locker room with a three with less than 30 seconds to play but Grove City held the 22-16 lead at the break.

Grove City eventually built its lead to 12, 31-19, its first double-digit lead of the game, but Hickey and junior Matt Trent (Cleveland, OH/Trinity) made back-to-back layups on the next two Baron possessions to trim the lead back down to eight, 31-23, with 15:16 to play.

Just over a minute later, freshman Justin Mack (Oxnard, CA/Oxnard) hit a three to get Franciscan back to within five, 31-26, but Grove City used a 9-3 run over the next three minutes to re-take the double-digit lead, 30-29, with 11:18 to play. After Mack hit another three to make it an eight-point game once again, 42-34 with 9:44 left, Justice Rice made a layup a minute later to give Grove City the double-digit lead once again, this time for good.

Trent made it a 10-point game with 6:23 to play but Grove City used a 12-0 run over the next five minutes to take its largest lead of the game, 61-39, with just 1:28 to play. Sophomore Dalton Davis (Gardenerville, NV/Douglas) made the three-pointer for the Barons in the final minute but the Wolverines sealed the 64-42 win with a three with 42 seconds left.

Trent led the Barons with his third double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds while Schriner chipped in 10 points and four rebounds. Junior Josh York (Russia, OH/Russia Local) posted four points and seven rebounds for the Barons.

The Barons will come home for the first time this season as they host Westminster (PA) on Saturday for a 2:00 pm tip on Kuzma Court.
