STEUBENVILLE - Despite a strong first quarter, the Lady Barons fell to the D'Youville Spartans Saturday afternoon.
Franciscan took off with an early lead, but soon met their match as D'Youville took possession of the ball. Possession bounced back and forth between the two teams throughout the first. The Lady Barons closed out the first quarter outscoring the Spartans 15-13.
D'Youville made its presence known in the second quarter, outscoring Franciscan by fourteen points. The Spartans went on a five-point scoring run, quickly gaining the lead. After several turnovers by the Lady Barons, D'Youville took advantage and stretched its once four-point lead to twelve points.
Franciscan opened the half with a three-pointer by freshman
Angela Starre. D'Youville answered with a ten-point scoring run. A good jumper by
Kaitlyn Sonneberger with three minutes left in the third put the Lady Barons within ten of the Spartans. D'Youville closed out the quarter with a jump shot giving them the lead with a score of 53-40.
After a quick jump shot by D'Youville, Starre returned the favor with a layup, putting Franciscan within ten points. The Lady Barons couldn't seem to bring themselves any loser, as the Spartans held a large lead for the remainder of the game. D'Youville's lead stretched to seventeen points as the Lady Barons took a tough loss. The final score was 64-47.
Franciscan shot 32.8% from the floor and had a total of 35 rebounds. Freshman
Angela Starre led the team in points scoring eighteen and had five boards.
Kaitlyn Sonneberger also contributed with twelve points and six boards.
The Lady Barons will be on the road for their next AMCC matchup, visiting Mt. Aloysius on Wednesday December 5, at 6 PM.
