Lady Barons Fall to Mounties on the Road

CRESSON, Pa. – The Franciscan women's basketball team dropped an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference tilt to Mount Aloysius on Wednesday in the Lady Barons' first road game of the season. The Lady Barons fell 72-52 to the Mounties.

Leading the way offensively for the Lady Barons was freshman Angela Starre (Carollton, OH/Carrollton). Starre posted a career-best 20 points while chipping in eight rebounds. Freshman Tia Taglione (Steubenville, OH/Catholic Central) posted a career-best nine points and six rebounds for the Lady Barons.

Senior Gaby De Jesus (Crystal Lake, IL/Crystal Lake South) got Franciscan out to an early 2-0 lead with a layup thanks to an assist from Starre, but the Mounties answered on their next offensive possession with a three-pointer from Lea Sammarco. The Mounties took the 3-2 lead with 8:24 to play in the first and would not relinquish the lead for the rest of the game. Freshman Tessa Crider (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) cut the lead back down to seven, 21-14, with 44 seconds left in the first with her first three of the game but Mount Aloysius closed out the first with three-straight points to reclaim a 10-point lead, 24-14.

Mount Aloysius opened the second quarter with a 6-2 run to take the largest lead of the game until that point, 30-16, with 7:15 to play. Junior Rose Judge (Chittanango, NY/Holy Cross Academy) kept it a 12-point game as she scored Franciscan's next four points The Mounties kept the pressure on, however, and used a 10-6 run over the final 3:24 of the second to take a 44-26 lead into halftime.

After the Mounties put together an 18-10 third quarter, the Lady Barons offense heated up early in the fourth. Trailing 66-38 with 8:52 to play, Starre drilled a three-pointer and followed it with a fastbreak layup to cut the lead to 66-43 with 8:06 to play. Starre cut the lead down to 22 with just under five to play with her second three of the quarter and Taglione hit a pair of free throws to cut the lead to 70-50 with 3:47 to play. After a pair of good free throws for the Mounties pushed the lead back to 72-50, junior Cianna Vaughan (Yonkers, NY/Maria Regina) knocked down a jumper in the paint to bring the score to its final, 72-52 in favor of Mount Aloysius.

The Lady Barons shot 30.9% (21-for-68) from the floor for the game while the Mounties held a 45-40 rebounding advantage.

Franciscan hits the road for its second-straight road game as the Lady Barons travel to Medaille for a 1pm AMCC matchup.
