Third Quarter Lifts Medaille Past Lady Barons

BUFFALO, NY - In the final game before winter break, the Franciscan women's basketball team suffered a tough loss to Medaille on the road Saturday afternoon, 56-69.

Medaille began the first quarter with an early lead, scoring nine points in the first three minutes of the game. After a free throw by freshman Angela Starre gave the Lady Baron's their first point of the game, the Mavericks upped their lead by eleven points. The Lady Barons quickly jumped back, scoring six-straight points, but still trailed the Mavericks, 19-12 at the end of the first.

The Lady Barons began changing the tide of the game in the second quarter, outscoring the Mavericks 14-11. Rose Judge was subbed into the game, and made two jumpers, putting Franciscan within seven. A good jumper from junior Kaitlyn Sonneberger cut the Maverick's lead to five points. With six seconds left in the half, a good jumper from Abby Baierl got the Lady Barons to within four points, closing out the half 30-26.

The Mavericks quickly put the Lady Barons' momentum to a halt, scoring eleven points to open the half in only a minute and a half. Several fouls and turnovers set Franciscan back as Medaille picked up new found momentum. Medaille outscored Franciscan 28-16 in the third quarter, putting the Lady Barons behind 58-42.

Franciscan opened the fourth quarter with a quick six points. The Lady Barons quickly cut the deficit but were soon halted by the Maverick's offense. Medaille stretched the lead to thirteen points, closing out the game with a score of 56-69.

The Lady Barons shot 35.8% from the floor and totaled 44 boards. Freshman Angela Starre and senior Raegan Stead lead the team each with 10 points.

Franciscan will host their next AMCC matchup versus Pitt-Bradford on Saturday December 15, at 2 PM.
