ALTOONA, Pa. - A rough first quarter set Franciscan behind against Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference fore, Penn State Altoona, Thursday night. The Lady Lions seized the opportunity and took the early lead, leading them to a 74-43 victory.
Two early three pointers, a layup and a free throw gave the Lions an early lead above the Lady Barons. A pair of free throws from leading scorer
Angela Starre halted the scoring run. Penn St.-Altoona continued to stretch its lead despite several jump shot attempts and led 20-8 after the first quarter.
The Lady Barons matched the Lions with points scored in the second quarter, both putting up 13. Franciscan started the quarter off with a three-pointer from
Abby Baierl, cutting Penn St.-Altoona's lead to nine points, 20-11. Several breakaways helped the Lions gain back their lead. Starre halted another scoring run with a three-pointer. A layup and three-pointer from senior Reagan Stead added to the offensive effort. Penn St.-Altoona closed out the first half with the 33-21 advantage.
In the third quarter, the Lions stretched their lead to 20 points. A series of missed layups and missed jump shots set the Lady Barons behind by 25 points. Penn St.-Altoona outscored Franciscan 22-11 in the third quarter to lead 55-32 after the third.
The Lady Barons scored only 11 points in the fourth quarter, while the Lions scored 19. Penn St.-Altoona finished the game with a lead of 31, 74-43. Starre had her second double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Baierl was close behind with nine points and five rebounds.
Franciscan shot 25.8% from the floor and 23.8% from the three-point line. The Lady Barons also had 39 boards.
The Lady Barons will face their next AMCC matchup at Hilbert University on Saturday January 5, at 1 PM.
