Strong Second Half Not Enough for The Lady Barons

GREENSBURG, Pa. - The Franciscan women's basketball team faced another tough defeat after a valiant effort in the second half on Wednesday night at Pitt-Greensburg. Despite being out-scored 37-30 in the second half, the Bobcats held on to win 66-57.

Pitt-Greensburg took control of the first quarter, scoring the first eight points of the game. Franciscan came back from the deficit, coming within four points of the Bobcats. The Lady Barons did not break through the Bobcats' lead and ended the first quarter trailing 20-12.

To start the second quarter, senior Gaby De Jesus got fouled after a rebound in attempt to put up a shot and made two free throws. This put the Lady Barons within two points of the lead. The Bobcats stretched their lead to nine points before Franciscan scored again. By the end of the second quarter, Pitt-Greensburg had stretched their lead to 16-points and took a 36-20 lead into halftime.

The Lady Barons outscored the Bobcats 15-13 in the third quarter. Pitt-Greensburg managed to keep a fourteen-point lead to end the quarter. Franciscan had begun its comeback. The Lady Barons carried their momentum into the fourth quarter trailing 49-35.

Franciscan battled in the final period, pushing offensively and making leaps and strides as the quarter went on. The Lady Barons fought to cut the Bobcats' lead but failed to do so until there was one-minute left in the game. Franciscan went on an eight-point scoring run, coming within five of Pitt-Greensburg. This was the closest the Bobcats allowed the Lady Barons to come and ended the game with a score of 66-57.

Franciscan shot 55.17% from the floor during the second half and went 9-11 from the free throw line. Junior Abby Baierl led the team in points scoring 17. Freshman Angela Starre was right behind Baierl with 11 points for the night and a team-best eight rebounds.

The Lady Barons are on the road for their final game of the season in Buffalo, New York where they will face AMCC matchup D'Youville on Saturday, February 16 at 2 PM.
