NEW CONCORD – The Franciscan women's lacrosse team rolled to a 21-1 win over Muskingum in the season opener for both teams, Monday night.
The Lady Barons were led by freshman
Grace Deegan (Akron, OH/Stow) with seven goals and two assists while senior
Carly McDonald (New Market, MN/Lakeville) added four goals and five assists. The Lady Barons were just two goals and four points shy of the program's single-game records in goals and points. Senior goalie
Brittany Bain (Lexington Park, MD/St. Mary's Ryken) needed just five saves in net to pick up her first win of the season.
Franciscan wasted little time as the Lady Barons scored seven times in the first 10 minutes of action. Deegan kicked off the scoring flurry with her first career goal just 1:21 into play. Just over a minute later, Deegan followed it up with her second goal. With just 4:28 gone in the game, McDonald caused a turnover and picked up the ground ball. The senior went straight to the cage for her first goal of the season and game. Sophomore
Maria Hilkert (Danville, PA/Danville Area) followed suit with his first goal of the year after senior
Elizabeth Jordan (West Milford, NJ/Mary Help of Christians) won the next draw.
The Lady Barons then rattled off eight more goals to take a 12-0 lead with 11:41 to play and force a running clock for the rest of the game. The Muskies got one back as Dani Crisp scored Muskingum's first goal of the season with 9:32 left before halftime.
Deegan scored the half's final goal with 4:25 left thanks to an assist from senior
Elizabeth McEntee (Sandwich, MA/Sandwich) and the Lady Barons led 13-1 at the break.
Deegan and the Lady Barons picked up right where they left off in the second and scored four goals in the first 10 minutes to push their lead to 17-1. Deegan kicked off the run while Hilkert, sophomore
Maddy Smith (Alexandria, VA/Bishop Ireton), and freshman
Annie King (Westerville, OH/St. Francis deSales) each added a tally.
After a uncharacteristic scoring drought in the game, King picked up her second goal with 17:17 to play to push the lead to 18-1. Sophomore
Maureen Cain (Cleveland, OH/Rocky River) scored her first career goal with 11:28 to play as the Lady Barons were stretching their possessions before McDonald and Deegan traded the game's final two goals to seal the 21-1 win for Franciscan.
Franciscan finished the day with 33 shots and was 14-for-15 on clears. The Lady Barons won the ground ball battle 16-6 and won 15 of the 23 draw controls.
The Lady Barons have a quick turnaround as they travel to Marietta, Ohio on Wednesday for a 6:00 pm non-conference tilt against the Pioneers.
