WHEELING, WV – The Franciscan University men's tennis team moved to a perfect 6-0 in AMCC play on Sunday, downing conference opponent Penn St.-Altoona in an afternoon matchup. Originally billed as a 1 p.m. outdoor match at Stuebenville's Belleview Park, competition was instead moved indoors and postponed until 4:30 p.m., given inclement weather conditions.
The Barons ensured that the team's nine-year win streak against Altoona would continue at least into the postseason, as stellar doubles play across all three courts would quickly close the door on any potential upsets.
No. 1 doubles duo
Gary Pierre and
Billy Presume broke four straight times to register an 8-0 victory on the first court, a feat matched by sophomore pair
Aidan Howard and
Christian Cappello on court 3. No. 2 doubles tandem
Jack Galla and
Luke Conrad would drop only two games on route to an efficient victory on court two; both found opportunities to outlast their Altoona counterparts from the baseline, giving the Barons a quick 3-0 start upon match completion.
Singles play quickly lent six more points to the Barons' score on the day. Conrad and Cappello would win 12 straight games at their respective No. 2 and No. 6 singles spots. Galla worked an effective serve-and-volley strategy into his 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles, finding every opportunity to close points out inside the service line.
Pierre and Howard each turned in a similar 6-0, 6-1 score, both dropping a single second set game before wrapping up matches on their own terms. At No. 3 singles, Presume saw the closest second set of the day, before regrouping at 5-3 to finish his opponent 6-0, 6-3.
After the match, fully grown adult male and team captain Stephen bolster remarked "The weather indoors was definitely suboptimal, but we played through it."
The Barons will begin AMCC postseason play with an Erie, PA match against 4-seed Penn State Behrend. Doubles play is set to begin at 3:30 p.m., as they seek their seventh straight conference title.
