Lady Barons Honor Seniors with 20-2 Win in Regular Season Finale

STEUBENVILLE – The Franciscan women's lacrosse team capped the regular season and a 20-2 win over Waynesburg, Saturday afternoon.

Freshman Grace Deegan already had the freshman scoring record coming into the game, but she added the single-season scoring record with her seven goals against the Yellow Jackets. For the season, Deegan has 55 goals and 12 assists for 67 goals – her goal and point totals are both single-season records for the Lady Barons.

Following the game, head coach Maura Conant honored her six graduating seniors. During the game, five of the seniors who play in the field scored at least two points while senior keeper Brittany Bain made six saves in her final game on Memorial Field. Carly McDonald led all players with nine points behind five goals and four assists, Elizabeth Dawyot scored once and added three assists, Elizabeth McEntee posted a goal and two assists, Treise McCarthy scored once and assisted a goal, and Elizabeth Jorden scored on a free position shot and assisted one goal.

This senior class goes down as the winningest class in program history as their sophomore season was the first winning season for the program (2016 – 8-5). In their four years, the Lady Barons are 32-24 and have clinched a spot in the Presidents' Athletic Conference tournament in their first year in the PAC. Presently, Franciscan is 8-6 on the year and finished 5-2 in the PAC.

Franciscan raced out to a 14-0 lead in the first 23 minutes of action and never looked back. After Waynesburg made it 14-1 with 4:40 left in the first half, McDonald pushed the lead back to 15-1 with her 34th goal of the year. With 10:50 to go, Deegan scored her second-straight goal to push her season goal total to 54, breaking the previous single season goal total. Waynesburg got one more back to make it 18-2 but Deegan and Jordan tallied the game's final two goals to seal the 20-2 senior day win for Franciscan.

The Lady Barons now prepare for their meeting with Washington & Jefferson on Tuesday in the first round of the PAC tournament. A full tournament preview will be released on Monday.
