Lady Barons Pick Up First-Ever Win Against Geneva

| By:
STEUBENVILLE – The Franciscan Lady Barons defeated Geneva College 3-1 on Thursday at Steubenville Country Club in their first-ever home match. The match play event consisted of four matches, with Franciscan coming out on top in three matches and narrowly losing in one.
  • Izzy Zavala closed out Geneva's Grace Leer 7 and 5, closing the match out on the 13th green. Zavala parred the #3 par 4 to go up one, and never looked back to go on to a strong victory.
  • Marcella Travis finished out Heather Laird 3 and 2 on #17. The back and forth front nine lead to a dominant back nine to seal the match.
  • Dennise Carraczo made a huge comeback to defeat Zaria Smiley 3 and 2 on #16. Dennise made the turn down three, only to win six out of seven holes on the back nine.
  • Hailey Jansen lost 1 down to Calli Grimplin. It was a back and forth match with no one ever leading by more than one throughout the match. Grimplin won eighteen by one shot to close it out.
"It was a great competitive day for the whole team today," remarked head coach Mitch Morelli. "We bought into the match play mentality and it paid off in a big way today with the win.

"I was really proud of the whole team today gutting out some tough wins. We were able to learn how to play with a lead and losing. Izzy winning up 7 is very impressive, and Dennise gutting out a down three match and winning six holes straight to a win."

Franciscan has a week off before they resume action at Washington & Jefferson in its two-day tournament on September 29th and 30th.
