Strong Second Half Not Enough For Franciscan at Hilbert

Hamburg, NY- Hilbert had a very strong first half as six Hawks score in double figures to down the Barons for the second time this season.

The Basics
Scores: Franciscan 84 - Hilbert 90
Records: Franciscan (5-10 , 4-6 AMCC) - Hilbert (11-5, 7-4 AMCC)
Location: Hafner Recreation Center - Hamburg, NY

How it Happened
  • The Barons came out ready to play today as they would jump out to a 15-9 lead early on in this one. Joe Schriner hit a pair of buckets while Travis Lien and John Noce made early threes. The score would be 20-16 after a tough and one from Sean Hickey, but then the Hawks would take the lead for the first time as they went on a 9-0 run. Joe Vernau finally snapped the run as he converted one of his two free throw attempts. The Barons would get it back to within five as Hickey and Noce added three balls, but the Hawk's offense would not get cold as a 10-3 run would ensue to give them a commanding lead once more. The Barons would get it back to within single digits as Matt Trent and Drazen Frankovitch made a pair of free throws, while Joe Schriner made his first three pointer. The Hawks would end the half on a 6-0 run, that included a buzzer beating three by Lazar Jovanovich's three pointer. Hilbert led 52-37 at the half.
  • The Hawks came out strong in the early going, as they went on a 14-6 run to start the half. They also managed to draw four early Franciscan fouls which were crucial down the stretch of this one. The Barons would respond with a 7-0 run as seniors Noce and Schriner would heat up. This would put the Barons still down 66-50 with 13:11 left in the half. The Barons would keep their foot on the gas as Lien and Hickey added triples of the own, and the game was back to a single digit defect at 68-59. The Hawks would continue to play aggressive and get to the rim with contact as they would enter the one and one with 8:37 to play in the game. Both teams would exchange buckets as neither team could get a stop when they needed one. Matt Trent would hit his first three of the game with 1:53 left setting the score to 84-77. The Barons finally got a couple stops, but a couple of missed threes and a missed front end of a one and one would put this one out of reach down the stretch. Lien and Trent added a couple late buckets, but the Hawks would prevail 90-84.
