How It HappenedÂ
The Lady Barons were unable to pull off the sweep of the Yellow Jackets this season. Waynesburg avenged their earlier loss to Franciscan by beating them on their home court on Tuesday night.
The Lady Barons started slow, as the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 7-1 lead in set number one. Caitlin O'Malley grabbed the momentum back with a kill of her own. Then Brynn Jacobson would really go on a tear by adding four kills over the next six points, to help tie it back up at 9-9. The Yellow Jackets regained the lead and pulled ahead to a score of 12-9. Maria Bosco would answer the call this time for Franciscan with a pair of kills. Unfortunately for Franciscan, Waynesburg would go on another big run, that put them in control with the score at 23-16. Things were not looking good for Franciscan, but they were able to dig deep and go on a 6-0 run to pull within one of the lead. A Franciscan ser vice error snapped the run and Waynesburg would get the game point to win 25-22.
Set number two started about the same as the first set, as Waynesburg would take an 8-1 lead. Caitlin O'Malley and Maria Bosco added kills to set the score at 9-3. The Yellow Jackets would keep attacking, as they ran the score up to 16-6. Franciscan would not go away though, as a 5-0 run would ensue. Renee Antonelli added three kills during the run to help cut the lead in half. Unfortunately Franciscan would not be able to get closer than five away from the lead, as Waynesburg took the second set, 25-18.Â
Set three started out much better, as Antonelli and O'Malley had early kills to set the tone with a 2-1 lead. Lucy Pridemore added a couple big kills from her middle position, as Franciscan held the lead through the first half of the set. With the score at 15-12, Franciscan's favor, Waynesburg would go on a 4-1 run to tie it at 16-16. Antonelli would lead the charge for Franciscan again, as she added back to back kills to take the lead at 18-16. Waynesburg had another run in them, as they were able to retake the lead once more at 21-20. Lucy Pridemore added another kill to even it up at 21-21. Freshman libero Sara Moore went back to serve, and she served four straight point including an ace to win the third set.
Franciscan had their best start to a set in the fourth. Antonelli had two early kills in route to a 4-0 start. Waynesburg responded from a quick timeout to regain the lead at 6-5. A couple of Waynesburg errors and an O'Malley ace would help Franciscan regain the lead at 9-7. The Yellow Jackets responded with their biggest unanswered run of the night, an 8-0 run to retake the lead. They later added a 6-0 run as well to give themselves a 22-12 lead. With the Yellow Jackets on point from winning the match at 24-13, Antonelli went back to serve. She would add a kill and two aces before a service error that would give Waynesburg the match.
