Franciscan 7, Baldwin Wallace 2
Steubenville, Ohio - The Franciscan University Women's Tennis team defeated Baldwin Wallace
Doubles
The Lady Barons got off to a strong start in doubles play with the #2 team of
Haley Davinsizer and
Zoey Stapleton. Davinsizer/Stapleton won their doubles match 8-0 picking up the first point for the Lady Barons. Baldwin Wallace pair of Yates/Breedlove had excellent serves, but Haley's excellent ball placement on her returns were too much for the Yellow Jackets pair to overcome.Â
  The #3 pairing of
Susan Schuberg and
Caroline Picard took their match 8-5 winning the second point for the Barons on the day. Schuberg/Picard have amazing chemistry and energy, and they used it today to get passed a competitive team of LeMaster/Trost from the Yellow Jackets.
To round out doubles play today, our top pairing of freshmen
Olivia Colby and sophomore
Maria Herrera faced Morris/Heideman. The Lady Barons took the match in the tie-break 7-4. Today was the first day back for Herrera after being out from injury. The Colby/Herrera team is an exciting one to watch, as these two are a power-hitting combo. Colby plays very aggressive on the front line, and the mistakes she made last night turned into points today. Herrera had some rust to knock-off early in the match, but toward the end her drop shots were landing, and turning into points. In the tie-break, Franciscan was up 6-3, and Colby had the chance to end the game on her serve. She dropped one point due to a double serve error. On her second point serving, the tandem performed as expected. Colby served a heater at the Yellow Jackets who sent a lob ball back at Herrera. Herrera did what she does best and slammed it at the Yellow Jackets. Morris made a great effort to produce a return, but was out long and the Lady Barons finished doubles play with a 3-0 sweep.
Singles
Franciscan would continue its momentum from the doubles matchups, with a win in #4
Caroline Picard, #6
Susan Schuberg, #3
Olivia Colby, #5
Haley Davinsizer. Picard won her match in straight sets. #1
Maria Herrera and #3
Zoey Stapleton fought hard against their opponents, but came just shy of the victory.
Who's Next?Â
The Lady Barons will return to action next week, as Muskingum comes to town for a non-conference matchup at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday afternoon. These two teams have only played each other once with the Lady Barons winning by a score of 9-0 in 2018. This will be the Muskies second match of the fall, as the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) plays their women's tennis conference season during the spring semester this season.Â
