Women's Volleyball Starts PAC Play in Tri Match

How It Happened 
The Franciscan Women's Volleyball team dropped the first match of the day against the defending PAC Champions, Westminster, in straight sets. 

The Lady Barons started off set number one well, as Renee Antonelli had a pair of kills and Brynn Jacobson added one in a 4-1 run to start. Westminster would battle back to tie it up at 5-5. Franciscan would retake the lead on a Westminster error and a Caitlin O'Malley kill. A 6-0 Westminster run would give them a lead that they would not relinquish. The Titans would add a 5-0 and 4-0 run later on in this set, to take the first 25-14.

Lucy Pridemore opened up the second set with her first kill of the day, but then Westminster would get going with a 4-0 run. Later in the set, a kill by Jacobson and an ace by Pridemore would pull the Barons to within one at 12-11. It would be all Titans the rest of the set, as a 13-5 run gave Westminster the second set.

Once again the Barons battled in the early going of a set, as the score stood at 3-3 after six serves. The Titans though proved to be too much as they would go on two long runs again to quickly pull ahead at 19-6. The Titans closed out the third set 25-7.

Inside the Numbers 
- Renee Antonelli led Franciscan with seven kills in three sets
- Sara Moore registered double-digit digs with 11.
- Emily Nutter added 11 assists.
- Kaylee Sciubba had a game-high 6.0 blocks for Westminster.

How It Happened 
After losing game two of the tri-match to Westminster, Thiel came into game three hungry for their first win of the season. After splitting the first two sets, the Tomcats were able to secure their first win over the Barons by a score of 3-1.

Brynn Jacobson opened up set one, just like she did against Westminster, with a kill to give Franciscan the 1-0 edge. After that, it was all Thiel, as they were able to pull out to a 12-3 advantage. Jacobson added another kill and an ace later in the set, but the Tomcats would hold on to win 25-12.

Franciscan would come out ready to play in set number two, They were able to take an early 7-5 lead with kills from Brynn Jacobson and Maria Bosco. The Tomcats would battle back to tie it up at 9-9. Maria Bosco gave Franciscan a spark, as she added back-to-back kills from the middle hitter position. An 8-2 Franciscan run would ensue to give them a commanding 19-12 edge. Renee Antonelli and Maria Bosco would each add kills later in the set to help Franciscan take set two, 25-17.

Renee Antonelli kept up her strong play from the last set, as she added a pair of kills in the early going of set four. After a back and forth start to the set, Thiel would start to pull away with a 15-10 lead. A 6-1 Thiel run would put Franciscan in their largest deficit at 20-11. Emma McDonald snapped the run with a kill of her own. Emily Nutter and McDonald would each add a kill down the stretch, but Thiel was able to finish it off at 25-17.

The Barons would not quit, as they came out battling in set four. Franciscan jumped out to an early 5-3 lead thanks to a pair of kills from Jacobson. Thiel responded with a 5-0 run of their own to retake the lead at 8-5. Thiel would be able to stretch their lead up to eight points at 21-13. Jacobson would again get Franciscan started with another big kill. Nutter, Antonelli and Bosco would all add kills of their own, and just like that, the lead was cut to thee at 23-20. The Tomcats would stand strong and take the last two points to win the match. 

Inside the Numbers 
- Renee Antonelli recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 15 digs.
- Emily Nutter also had a double-double with 27 assists and 15 digs. 
- Maria Bosco led all players with 3.0 blocks.
- Thiel had a match kill percentage of 20.7%, slightly better than Franciscan at 15.4%.

Who's Next? 
Franciscan will get right back into PAC play, as Saint Vincent comes to town for a Tuesday night matchup. The Barons are 2-5 all-time against the Bearcats, but Franciscan came out victorious in a five set thriller last season. Emily Nutter had a massive day in the 3-2 win last spring. She recorded 37 assists and 26 digs to help Franciscan pull through after falling in the first two sets. Renee Antonelli added 13 kills and Maria Bosco added 11 in the win.
