Steubenville, Ohio - The Franciscan Women's Tennis team extended their winning streak up to six in a row and improved their PAC record to 3-0 with a win over Waynesburg on Thursday evening.
Doubles
The Lady Barons began the match up 1-0, since Waynesburg was unable to field a #3 doubles pairing to face Franciscan's
Caroline Picard and
Laina Anderson. The #1 pairing of
Olivia Colby and
Maria Herrera continue to be a hard-hitting combination. Colby and Herrera took their match in a straight set.
Haley Davinsizer, fresh off her player of the week award, was moved up to the #2 doubles pairing with senior
Zoey Stapleton. The #2 doubles pair were also able to take their doubles match in a straight set. Going into singles play the Lady Barons were up 3-0.
Singles
Franciscan won their 4th match point at the beginning of singles play since Waynesburg only fielded five singles hitters, giving
Laina Anderson her second victory of the day.
Maria Herrera,
Olivia Colby,
Haley Davinsizer, and
Zoey Stapleton all beat their opponents and none of them dropped more than two points.
Caroline Picard was the last to finish for the night. Picard beat her opponent in straight sets, and clinching the Lady Barons sweep.
Who's Next?
The Lady Barons get right back into it tomorrow afternoon at Grove City. Franciscan is 4-4 all-time against Grove City and have won the last four meetings. Last season the Lady Barons won 7-2 in their regular season matchup, and then won in the PAC semifinal 5-4. In the closer matchup, two singles matches went to a third set.
Zoey Stapleton lost the #3 singles match to tie it up at 4-4, but
Caroline Picard pulled off the come back win, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 to punch their ticket to the PAC Championship which they went on to win.
